So back to the first obsticle...

Picked up a RWD E91 instead of using my xDrive
I remember awhile back when I was comparing part numbers on real oem, I noticed that the number of bolts and mounting points on the transmission were different on xdrive and rwd. Plus the driveshaft length is different. Heading on the right track keeping it rwd to rwd.
As rothwem mentioned, the tunnel on the chassis is completely different as a whole, providing wider space for the fat transfer case.

Since I'm swapping the complete drivetrain, the transmission support brace would have been the only obsticle, which I was ready to tackle... But after doing some thinking, the 06 325xi I wanted to use was a filthy little whore in the eyes of CarFax. The newly acquired E91 is a clean slate with zero accidents/reports, 2-Owner, with low mileage, so that was the main motive behind aquiring it, the RWD factor was the cherry on top.

Clean title alone was worth it! To me, using a salvage title car is a waste of money. Not saying your original base car was, but just saying in general. No matter how nice the build is, it's still a salvage title.

LA is the land of cars, anytime of the year haha.

Let me know if you ever get more serious about that relocation. I'm a real estate broker. 😁

Plus it would be awesome to have another badass E91 in the state 😂

I was thinking that if I were you, I'd just get a different E91...and then you did it!

I'm taking notes over here BTW. I'd like to do a DCT/N55 swap somewhere down the line.

Tore down the donor in the front to see how extensive the damage was.

Waiting on a couple more suspension parts to come in so I can get the donor drivable inside the shop.

In between, been collecting a bunch of OEM N54 parts and ordering a bunch of maintenance items.

Don't forget to pull the under trunk tray from the donor E92. You'll need that to make room for the exhaust since the E91 under trunk tray is quite large.

Oh there's much more to that, I actually finished swapping the rear ends over the weekend and in between swapped the trays. Unfortunately, after completing the rear end swap, I learned that I'll need to swap the vent pipes for the charcoal canister, along with the vent pipe that goes from the gas tank to the front.

All that will require the removal of the gas tank which isn't a big deal, however... The vent pipe that goes from the tank to the charcoal canister is guided along the top of the subframe. Technically I would need to drop both subframes again but I'm leaving the E92 subframe as is and will just purchase another N54 vent pipe to run on the wagon, so I'll still need to drop subframe on the E91... again.

Here's the difference in the trunk pans incase anyone else was wondering. The charcoal canister on the N52 is located on the passenger side, while the N54's have it on far left (driver side).

The E91 is filthy inside out so I'll slowly be cleaning all the hidden nicks and creases as I go along with the build.

Sweet progress! I'm taking notes as well and thanks for documenting the whole process.
Hope to see it in person as well since I'm in NYC too!

Thanks guys!

Btw, are there any alternative solutions for a rear M-Tech bumper or am I stuck with having to order an OEM from the dealer?

I thought finding a rear E61 M-Tech bumper was hard when I was looking for one (which I eventually found used), but a used E91 sounds like a dream.

I haven't found any... I've been looking, and it seems for the wagon, the only way is oem unless a unicorn pops up in your local pick n pull.

Because of the wagons different taillights and rear quarters the bumper is approx 75% different... maybe less... some have had success chopping and grafting a sedans msport/tech lower portion to the upper part of the wagons bumper... but in the end I'd rather not have hacked bumpers.

I haven't been able to find any replica msport/tech touring rear bumpers in the US. There were a handful of people making them overseas in EU where wagons are more common, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be cost effective in to ship them here unless we wanted to get a group buy together

Awesome work, this will be a cool wagon!

Do the rear trays just bolt in? That makes it a whole lot easier, would have thought there would be some welding and cutting.

I'm in the same boat! OEM is so expensive... Maybe group buy?
