DIY - POWERED SEAT INSTALL

Hey guys, is hard to find a complete guide to retrofitting powered seats in E9x series cars, so I thought I would document a step by step guide in case someone finds this information useful

First of all some disclaimers....

E9x cars (and seats) come in lots of different variations, (heated seats, non heated seats) and lots of different wiring combos (eg idrive controllers, reverse camera wiring etc etc)..... point is this guide may not be exactly the same for your car and your seat option. If the wire is not the exact same color, or the guide says plug in a blue plug for the aux and you dont have aux in your car, dont stress just skip that bit

Also the guide explains how to get power and a wake up signal to the powered seats and is a basic set up only. You should get movement, memory function, bolsters and lumber working (not sure about heating tho) but does not cover everything (im looking at you passenger sensor and coding)

I have however added some pictures which maps out the pins for the under seat connectors, so you should be able to work it out... (see post #15)

Finally I am not an expert in seat installations, please don't leave a heap of "I installed my seats and blah blah blah, what do i do now?? questions" because I probably wont know the answer

For most people the key to retrofitting the power seats is to run an extra power and ground wires to pins 8 & 9 (ie power on pins 4 & 9 and ground on pins 8 & 13). Then running a CAN high and CAN low wires to pins 2 & 3 on both the passenger and drivers side, to provide a wake signal)

While not entirely necessary to remove the interior of the car to tap into the wires you need etc, it makes the job 100x easier and someone might find the instructions on how to remove consoles etc helpful

Finally disconnect the battery and wait 30 seconds or so, BEFORE unplugging your seats. If you disconnect them while still powered, the system will think there is a air bag or seat belt problem and throw and error light on the dash that will need to be coded out. You have been warned !!!

Also this guide assumes your seats came with the wiring harness from the floor that attaches to the seats. This harness is needed to scavenge the additional wires and connectors you will need to complete this project. If the seller did not supply the harness then go back and get it or head to your nearest wreckers and get one. Alternatively if you are electrically savy you can make your own power/ground wires from12 gauge wire and bmw connector 61138364844 and CAN lines from twisted 18 gauge wire and BMW 61131383776 (credit to woodpecka for this info)
