Anyone with the rein flange have this problem? For the life of me, I can't get that thing to sit flush at the bottom and of course it leaks. Tightened the bolts to the point of stretching them and have tried several times to reattach it. Thought at first that I might not have bitten all of the pieces out, but I had. Ordering more bolts, but wondering if I just got a POS from rein.

It's not Rein, it's the outsourced shop they used to CNC the flange. Thinking the tolerances are not what they are supposed to be. Mine fit fine, but seeing how the shop I work at is, I could see some being too big or too small sneak by the QC department.

If the mounting points where the bolts are is flush/seated on the head(looks like it from the pic), then no amount of tightening the bolts will bring that bottom portion in. As said above me, could be bad q.c./machining

I had to really lube my oring up with coolant and pushed hard hard, it 'popped' in.

Yeah I tried that too. I'm going to give it a whirl with silicone one last time after I get some new bolts in. Good thing I never drive that car.

Silicone and new bolts did the trick thank god. Although the e60 has a little more wiggle room to get the hose off the t-stat, it's still a PITA.

And if anyone is wondering the torque for the bolts is is really low at 8 Nm/6 ft-lbs.

How did you guys cut the band clamp without cutting into the rubber hose?

I have seen several people say that they just crushed the ring with vice grips, thereby crushing the inner sleeve of the flange allowing them to slip it off. Others have just been able to slip it off simply because the whole flange crumbled when they removed it. You just would just need to be careful to not contaminate your system with the broken pieces by folding the hose over or something like that and cleaning out the broken bits well.

I personally just replaced the whole hose with the flange already installed to not have to deal with the potential of damaging the pump that I just replaced in the last few months. The benefit of having just replaced the pump and thermostat was that I oriented the hose clamp screw on the hose to the t-stat upward, making it easier to remove the hose from the top of the engine.

I replaced the hose. Hose was probably original so it was due for a swap out. I getting ready to do all my cooling hoses as I hate getting stuck for no reason.

I crushed the flange. Metal band came right off. Be sure to do it with the hose pointing down so nothing falls into it.

When it rains it pours.
Just get an aluminum version from FCP or ECS tuning . Just make sure to put a little oil on the new o-ring before you install it.

I have that specific, black Mickey Mouse Flange. I have found that the coolant hoses on the e90 are pretty stout. It's the plastic connectors that fail.

Glad to hear this. I've had excellent luck with their stuff and in many cases have found it's actually the OE part, sometimes even with the BMW logo (ex: vacuum hoses and shifter bearing).

The fact this flange is made in Turkey and not China is nice to see.

I hate to be proponent of the under-designed factory piece but it lasts 100k+ and fits every time. Just change it out every time you do a 100k coolant flush and you’re good.

Except if it doesn’t fit. And you’re stretching bolts and possibly messing up threads for a MUCH larger headache.

What’s forever? If you buy this car and have to replace it the chances that you will have to replace it again before you sell the car seem pretty slim…

Look, BMW has made similar mistakes on both the E36 and e46 platforms. The aftermarket makes a metal part where the plastic part failed, but in each scenario the metal part has its own design flaws.

So, take either decide to makes this part routine maintenance or decide to end up fixing another problem the aftermarket created. Choice is yours.

I’ll take a known OE issue. Been there. Done that.

Yeah I just keep a spare 3 way hose, the top coolant hose that goes back to the bottle and that hose on stock now.

Id want to replace the hose bit anyway so replacing that part with it isnt a big deal.

Fair point, but it's also easier in some ways to install the aluminum flange since you don't have to disconnect those from the thermostat side.

Not bad advice. But I did buy 2 ea. of the $17 aluminum flange found on Amazon. Each fit perfectly in each of my N52's. I installed each at separate times, about a year distant from each other. Both on aged, high-mileage hoses. The E90 has been in over 2 years and north of 20,000 miles. The Z4, 1 year now, and about 7,000 miles.

Rein's part was kinda late to the party. ECS had to go all fancy and anodized theirs just to be cool 😎

I posted a DIY on crushing the plastic flange to remove it if you are interested in the details. I just used a brake hose clamp and a rag stuffed in the hose.

True. In the case of our 328i Xdrive the coolant hose was the actual failure point. In which case just bought the whole thing.

Ah, Amazon. Diamonds in the rough over there. I've been burned by spark plugs and delighted by alternators. These days with no second car and little time (wee ones) I don't have the time for double-doing things.

But I am glad that Amazon delivered for you! That's pretty aces. All buttoned up for that little money. Can't be beaten.
