Oil Filter Housing Gasket

I did this a few months ago and had a PIA time getting to the bolt behind the manifold.

I started looking around for something simplier and came up with this.....

Craftsman 1/4" socket # 33084 - 8mm
Craftsman 1/4" knuckle
Craftstman 1/4" Extension # 43531

Fits perfectly between the housing and the manifold. Hope it helps....

Agreed that is the tool to use, however e-torx 10/12 socket instead of the regular socket.

Sorry, I should of explained, that is a 16pt socket that also fit Torx head bolts.... not a standard 6pt socket.

Socket is in Craftsman Set #32824

Got one of those also.... just make sure you tie a string on to it so when it drops you can retrieve it easy.

I actually had success with a 5/16" Craftsman Ratcheting Wrench! I locked onto the bolt and had the wrench stick out toward the front of the engine bay in between the clip wiring harness (removed) and the first plenum of the intake manifold. Keep in mind this was on an N52 (2006).

If you're using a non-reversible ratchet spanner, crack the bolt loose then unscrew the bolt with your bare fingers. Or the bolt and spanner will be pushed up against the coolant hose fitting which is fragile on removal.

Inspect your drive belt and all surrouding rubber hoses for swelling before commencing the job - the leaked oil may have damaged the rubber, causing it to swell. You might need a top hose, hose to the head, and a drive belt and possibly pulleys if the belt had been slipping and melted the plastic pulley(s)

Was the bolt in question over-torqued for anyone else? I tried to remove it using an 8mm 1/4" socket and the bolt started stripping. I also tried an 8mm ratcheting wrench but the bolt wouldn't budge.

Was your car hot or cold?

Don't know if it matters, but I had let my car sit overnight before working on it.

yes mine wanted to strip...which led me to the etorx 10-12 recommended above. It's less risky than the 8mm.

It's not a standard 8mm socket. They are the Craftsman 16pt sockets.

Did you try to ladder the wrenches (giving more leverage) by using another box end wrench connected to the open end side of the ratcheting wrench?

Next time use proper socket. Is inverted torx. No 6, 12 or 16 point 8mm

just unscrew the manifold a little and pull it out of the way, takes an extra five min, you are thinking too much into this, and the bolt it long it hits the manifold and you have to move it anyways
