So while i was on holidays down in Melb for a few days last week, i stopped in on Wednesday arvo to see our resident bmw coding wizz Vince (aka vtl).
I just happened to take my M3 cluster with me and within an hour and a half, the master had it coded, calibrated and installed.
The man is a genius

The old stock cluster

The finished product is just awesome
The M3 item just looks more at home and goes well with the M3 steering wheel too.
Everything (except the DCT shift lights as per usual) work perfectly like it was meant to be there from factory.

So after the trip home from Melb on the thursday the car was looking a little dirty.
So I dropped it off to Proto Car Care on thursday arvo to have them detail it all friday long to within an inch of its life lol.
I had them do this because I was booked to do a wedding on the saturday with my mum in her husbands 325i vert.
Here are a few quick pics of my 335i and their 325i on the day.
The bride rode in my 335i and the bridesmaids in the 325i.

At the pick up point

We drove directly home from Melb with minimal stops.
We left at 6am and arrived home at about 3pm.
Breaks all up were about 1 hour, so we did it in about 8 hours of driving.
Might have exceeded the limit in a few places
Could easily do it safely in 9 hours just cruising at the limit, 10 with a break or two.
Car was extremely filthy due to us spending a couple of days in Griffith for Easter with my grand parents prior to heading to Melb, and that place is just red dust city. Plus the bugs and everything, so yeah it was a mess lol.
But wasnt too bad on the way down to Griffith.

Awesome!

So the DCT cluster 'lights' can't be utilised at all outside of an M3?

With enough time and effort it can be done. Before I sold my cluster to Socket I was planning on fitting it to my car and making the shift lights work. This would involve designing a custom daughter board that would fit inside of the cluster to drive the LEDs. The shift lights are driven by a single chip (called a shift register), the daughter board would talk to the shift register and drive the LEDs. Then the board can listen in on the canbus and make the shift lights work accordingly to RPM.

The other alternative is to put a canbus sniffer on an M3 DCT and find out what CAN message it sends to the cluster to light up the LEDs. This would be a better solution as it wouldn't require modification to the cluster.

If I had a 3 series it would be something I'd do but an M3 cluster can't be retrofitted cleanly so I abandoned that idea lol

haha, nice! I'd pull the trigger if this was poss!

So is it safe to speculate that the 'shift register' is communicating directly to the TCU on the M3? This is the only difference with M3 DCT and N54 DCT.

But like you say, the RPM cluster is receiving a single already that needs to be sniffed or tapped to achieve this.. But no one in AU is as tech as you mate, so if you've given up... we are as good as dead on this solution

Requires a ton of trimming to get fitted in a 1 series so thats why I didn't do it.

The shift register is just a chip onboard the cluster that drives the LED shift lights. This shift register just receives data from the microprocessor on the cluster. I would propose just wiring the lines from the shift register to a custom daughterboard, since they are not driven by the cluster's processor on a 335i.

I am speculating that theres a canbus message sent by the TCU or DME that tells the cluster to light up the LED shift lights. If you could sniff the bus and replicate the message with a small custom module then it wouldn't be a too hard of a project. Just requires a bit of time and some development. If there was a fair amount of interest in this I might consider tackling the project, but you'd probably be paying a lot to just enable the shift lights

How many of us with M3 clusters are willing to get in on this?
I know i would be keen.

Lokks great mate! The M3 cluster looks so much better, albeit I kinda miss the fine graduations on the fuel gauge for calculating approx how much to fill the tank when doing E50 (I always found it very accurate)

Also the temp gauge being slightly off centre to the right as the N54 rubs hotter than the S65
