My SA said it is bad because when it gets that low it has a lot of dirt and other stuff in their that you are sucking into the engine. He also stated it is bad for the turbos.

That doesn't seem to make much sense.

Yes, you end up frying the pump since it needs fuel to cool. And if there is any gunk in the tank it gets sucked up.

I just don't understand why people are so hell bent on seeing how low the tank can go. Like christ, there is a gas station on almost every corner now....

store spare couple gallons container in a trunk for this test only. I have tried it, emptied tank completely on several makes and models, most will go at least 30 miles from the time it reads 0

So there is another 3 gallons or so after the main tank is exhausted?

I was panicking today bc I got a loaner with 1/8 of a tank of gas in it. I had to pick up my kids who were about 20 miles away and the computer was indicating 30 miles of range. Once I got within 5 miles of them, the computer indicated around 3-5 miles. At every stop light I was turning the engine off. I was actually down to 1 mile of range left before I found a gas station. Phew! Never again!

I got it down to 5 before I filled it up for the very first time. It goes into a 2nd stage of low fuel warning after a certain point and its quite annoying. Won't let you change the cluster display to even see the clock. lol
One of my co-workers has a TL and we were at lunch one day. It said 5 miles to empty but with 4 people in it on city streets it went to 0 within about a mile. Murphys law, we were in an area of town that had very few stations so I directed him to one that I knew to be about the most expensive one in town.

Just a tack onto this...I just left the house with 10 miles to E but was running late so I figured I would fill up after my appointment at the station about a mile away. Well after driving around a full parking lot for about 10 minutes waiting for a spot, my miles to E read ----, but I didn't have time to fill up so i had to park. Came back out and started up and made it to the station on ---- no problem. I also drove my E90 one time for about 10 miles on ----, so who knows.

If you are on pump gas I don't see what the point is of running the fuel so low is when stations are everywhere. If you ran a e85 mix then I understand your options are limited and you usually have to wait until your down to your reserve to get as close as to the mix as possible.
