For information I replaced my main stat with a Circoli stat from ECP in May 2013. For the past few months my coolant temp has rarely exceeded 60 C and MPG has suffered. Of course ECP only warrant the Circoli stat for 12 months. False economy when OEM BMW stat has a 2 year warranty.
You don't need to. I didn't and got on ok with it. It was only a fair few months after when changing the belts I found that I could remove the fan for quite a bit more room down the front. Mine is a manual so I'm not familiar with the auto set up.

Darn it, reading these posts forced me to check my e90 330d temperature this morning using the hidden menu, after 30 mins of driving my temp didn't go any higher than 77 degrees and I was booting it about to try and raise the temp!!!!!

Not had the car long and not had/noticed a DPF regen either as far as I can tell, maybe this is why, guess I need to get these done booooooo

Wish me luck ;O)

How do I get coolant temp up as I think there is something wrong with my system as my heating only gets slightly warm and never hot so this may be the reason.

Hi guys. My 330d has the DPF light on, I've checked my engine temps and I'm only getting 66℃! I'm guessing the first thing to do is get the thermostats changed? Has anyone got any part numbers or links to where I can get them from? Cheers

I would say both of them tbh. EGR stat is not expensive from the dealer.

Have you driven it hard to see if it goes above that?

I would not worry about it at 85C.

If I drive it hard it goes to 87-88. Is that enough for a dpf regen m8? I dont think I have seen one since I got the car..
I rather spend 150 on changing the stats, then 1.3k for a dpf

Yes dpf regeneration will occur at those temp. If your car maintains anything above 85 on motorway, it should regenerate.

When I had 330d, I never felt that it was regenerating. People say that RPM goes up, car feels heavy and so on...
None in my case. Only indication was that car ran on 92C when it was regenerating.

On a motorway it runs around 83-85. Can it be due to very cold air cooling + aircon? Im keeping an eye on it. Today during a bit of town driving it rose to 87C

On the motorway you should be running the average ECT, the engine is working hard enough to maintain and regulate the temperature.

When you say very cold air, do you mean around freezing? Even then you would hold the temperature. It is only off load, on the run, where you could drop a bit due to more cooling than waste heat. A/C shouldn't affect ECT, as the thermostat(s) regulate the coolant flow.

My 330d would hold the temperature (once hot) cruising at 50 - 60mph in sub zero temperatures. In fact at sub zero temperatures the ECT would be a degree or so hotter than say >5C. The reasoning, the thermostat is on the front of the engine, so the air cooling does chill the housing, that means the main thermostat closes a little, reducing coolant flow.

My 325d operating temp was 75 degrees, I changed both main and egr thermostats and expected it will settle at 90 degrees after warmup.

As long I hit the highway, it drops back to 81 and then goes to 85 and then back to 81 wtf???

I dont understand, since both thermostats are new from the dealer original bmw, why would behave like that?

Appreciate your help.

Mines exactly the same. It's really strange. I've had a problem with the auxiliary water pump for ages. Just ordered a new part. Will see if that makes a difference. It's the last thing I can think of...

Auxiliary water pump should not play any role in that, on my 320d it was faulty and coolant temp was always at 90 degrees during normal operation.

I am thinking if the new thermostats are operating corectly...or should I replace them again?

It depends, I hear a lot of people say all it does is circulate heat left over from engine when REST function is pressed.

However, i think it does more. It depends on how the solenoids are stuck...

To be specific, I think it helps circulate coolant to the heater core at low revs. This could explain why temp drops on the motorway. Just an idea. It probably won't help, but worth a try. I'll let you know...
