The car has 68 K miles and I have a BMW Gold powertrain extended warranty. The throttle actuator is not covered by the warranty. Thanks to the dealer, BMW made a good will and covered 65 % (IIRC) of the cost. |

The problem was the rubber rib (glued?) on the pulley separated from the metal part of the pulley. They replaced the pulley and the two belts. If it was me and was out of warranty, I will first try to clean the throttle actuator. |

I know this is an old thread but figured I would share. I was getting that error for the throttle valve but no SES light. One day when I shut the car down it sort of shuddered a bit. Next time I started the car the SES light was on and it was the same e code. I ordered a new one but before it arrived I opened the hood and manaully tried to turn the mechanism for the valve. You can see it right near the egr. At first when I tried to move it the thing was stuck. Tottally stuck. I wiggled it back and forth a few times and it freed up. I opened and closed the valve a few more times and it seemed OK. Got in the car , started it up, SES light was gone. I'm assuming that code with out an SES light is when the valve sticks for a second and then works fine again. Once it jams fully the SES light comes on.
All you have to do is manually move the valve. Few times to free it up. Since its sticking it's probably a good idea to replace it anyway but it will help get you through until you can change the valve. |

I think its a good idea to give it a good clean first. The throttle body on my wife's Honda likes to collect some build up and start sticking every two or so years. I give it a good clean and it solves the problem.
Given how much carbon build up these engines produce, it might be a good idea to clean up the assembly and see if it fixes the issue. It may not be a permanent fix, but its certainly cheaper and worth the time rather than buying a new assembly. |
