Help me diagnose possible FRM problem!
Hey everyone,
I have a 2011 N55 335i and had my FRM go bad (some interior lights wouldn't come on, windows wouldn't go down, no turn signals/hazards, and headlights stayed on all the time). I had a dealer replace it under extended warranty, however they told me that the SZL would also need replacing quoting well over 1k for it with labor. Figured I'd do that myself and save a bunch of money. When I got the car back after the FRM replacement, I still had headlights on, no turn signals, lights in steering wheel and DSC/central lock/hazards off. I replaced the steering column stalks and SZL with a new unit and coded it with Bimmergeeks Protool. No change. So I had the FRM replaced. No error codes. Checked all fuses. But I still seem to have symptoms suggestive of a bad FRM. Am I missing something? Any advice or suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks in advance |

Did you code the FRM?

Trying to find the thread where I actually fixed this, but we have the same car. I would not be surprised if your shop did not program the FRM, but they should have. You have to program it to your VIN. I use the Bimmergeeks tools. Not difficult to install, but you have to download the e92 datens. Then you can use INPA, ISTA and NCSExpert to test and re-program the FRM if you need to. Check out this thread, there is a picture of what it the ECU tree looks like in ISTA. If you FRM is not working or not programmed it will tell you here. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1671743

So I checked my FRM and it's coded to the correct VIN. Went ahead and recoded it anyway. No change.
Any further suggestions? Should I try and get a new or known working FRM? |

And all of the same symptoms? Headlights won't turn off? Do windows work? What did you use to code the FRM?
Here are basic instructions on how to code the FRM back to stock using NCS Expert. I use Revtor's profile. Not sure this is your problem, but it shouldn't hurt. Having said that, be very careful. If you brick the FRM, you will be buying another. If you do decide to try any coding, make sure you hook up a charger. You don't want the car losing power during the process. 1. Load NCSExpert. 2. Load Profile and select Revtor's profile if you have it or Expert mode 3. Click Start 4. Click Chassis 5. Choose E89 (for the E9X) 6. Click Back 7. Click Process ECU 8. Choose NFRM 9. Click Change Job 10. Choose CODIERDATEN_LESEN (This option will read from the FRM or whatever module you are choosing) 11. Execute Job. It should complete 12. Choose Read ECU (You will see a .trc file, you will know it's working as long as this file is populated) 10. Click SG_CODIEREN 11. Click Execute Job - Do this at your own risk If everything worked and your FRM is not bad, this should code everything back to factory default settings.

I used Bimmergeeks Protool. FRM had correct VIN, recoded it back to stock with correct VIN anyway. I'll try using NCS expert as well, just to make sure. |

I'll see if I can find the link for that. edit: Here are the Standard Tools and Datens: https://www.bimmergeeks.net/downloads edit#2: You will need this cable https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's not good enough to just replace the FRM, you have to code it afterwards. Follow the steps listed above. Can be tricky, but it can be done.
