The Subjective "High Mileage" Question
Howdy all, hate to ask such a common question, almost as bad as one of those "what oil should I use" threads. But i'm looking at a 2011 335d with 190k miles and want to get members 2 cents on whether you'd fux around and find out or pass? Again, understanding that maintenance history and condition play a huge role in long term reliability. The D in question looks spotless and very well kept aside from the common wear and tear items.. looks to be an original owner vehicle that was traded in at a dealership and then auctioned off.
I've owned many BMW's over the years and do all my own maintenance and repairs so i'm not turned off at all having to do any work. Once the common emissions components start to fail I would begin the process of deleting them rather than replacing the expensive bits and pieces. My overall research leads me to believe these are a solid drivetrain platform aside from the typical BMW stuff and emissions garb. Prove me wrong? Thanks again.

If it’s been maintained and not abused then you should be fine after taking care of the common things like VCG, cbu etc

Knowing whats known about any M57 and proper care/maintenance, if its the condition and options you want I say go for it.
Apples to oranges, but I sold my former minty E38 at 195k and the new owner was ecstatic. High mileage wouldn't bother me if its the combo I want and in the condition I want. BTW, I recognize your username from the E39 boards... I think.

That’s funny you mention that because I was reading “Yozh” post and thought his name and avatar picture looked familiar from Bimmer Forums. I definitely spent a lot of time in the E39 section when I had my 530i, 540i and 540i M-Sport. |

Agreed with above. My opinion is the "BMW Reliability" scare is a combination of poor maintenance (a lot to do with getting into a car they can't afford to begin with, and don't want to spend any additional money), and people taking their cars to the BMW dealer for every repair, which makes them 10x more expensive.
E90's and M57s have known issues that are pretty cheap for a DIY'er. |

I bought my X5D at 200k, and have had a super pleasant 80k+ miles with it it's sitting at 282k miles now, and is doing great. No plans on slowing down.
Trans service, delete and tue as needed, VCG, and thermostat if it fails are the big common things. There's no reason it wont run effortlessly until 300+. I also tow a lot of weight, a lot. I kidn of beat on my X5, like usually. And it takes it in stride and just keeps on chugging. |

Currently at 154K with my 2011. Agree with what others have said about trans svc, VCG, thermostat. I'd add: harmonic balancer (preferably the Fluidamper), glow plug module and glow plugs, exhaust pressure sensor hose, vacuum hoses, various seals (vacuum pump, air intake, etc). One of the turbo oil lines tends to leak. All fluids and filters. DPF can stay but SCR needs to be tuned out. Trans tune transforms the car.
