Oil Filter Cap

Hi I busted the tip on the inside of the oil filter cap on my 2011 328 M Sport. Can I drive the car with this broken? What exactly does it do? I have included a picture with the piece highlighted.

I would NOT drive the car until that is replaced. There are SI B bulletins for VANOS issues that express the importance of that green tip o-ring in maintaining correct oil pressure to the VANOS units. I would be concerned about oil pressure issues with that tip being broken.
