That is 3500 I can put towards another car that wont need a clutch for a LONG time.
I agree with the shop. The dual mass flywheel can go bad at high mileage. It's an extra $550 in parts and 1/2 hour of labor.

Kinda like the Ron White joke.... All the way to the crash site. But seriously I don't know. My original target was 250,000. The issue is it's the last of the classic BMW naturally aspirated Inline 6's. I regret getting rid of my E30. So I'm not sure.

Impressive! Just as expected, bulletproof internals with good maintenance. Glad to hear mine is good for another 150k if I so choose

I can. Like DaZuc mentioned, my car is diesel. It gets fantastic mileage on the freeway. I love it!

Btw Efthreeoh, do you plan on keeping the car longer past the 300k? At what point will you think about retiring it and getting something else?

Can you imagine feeling that a car is disposable? Even forgetting about the financials, it's pretty disrespectful towards the vehicle itself. Something's wrong with the clutch, throw the car away and get a new one.

Just turned 70K on my 07 328xi (10/06 build coupe). I think the only non-maintenance items I've had are VCG and one shock mount/sleeve. It may outlive me at the rate I drive it. I'm happy to keep it indefinitely as my DD so I can keep dabbling with other older toys.

It's a trade off, along with your new car comes much higher costs for insurance and registration. There's a lot of things I don't particularly like about the new BMWs and Efthreeoh has got a sweet, E90. With regular (inexpensive) fluid changes a trans and diff can last a long time.

Nice job Efthreeoh!!

Thanks. Funny thing is I have a full auto shop at home, lift, air tools, the works. I could double or triple the maintenance schedule without any real effort, but I've followed BMW's schedule pretty much to the tee. I don't think the car would be in any better shape for it if I had.

I think the N52 E90 was built as good or better than the E30.

Uh, no. They are better, but they definitely rust. My E90 is getting a new door under warranty due to rust.

You just saw that in another thread!?!

Congrats on your dedication to this car...wow!
Wonder what that cost of DIY would translate to if you had paid BMW Dealer to fix......$200000 perhaps, guess we will never know

I estimate I've saved about $9K in labor.

I like your ethics with regards to maintaining at bmw's recommended intervals. Great experiment!

If I didn't do so many short city trips in the mountains (aka, San Francisco) id likely try the trans fluid for longer. As such im changing it at a more conservative old-world conventional 60k. Or maybe I'm just fooling myself?

Also, does your moniker, aka handle, hint at your next bimmer purchase?
