But even if no leak, they might have all kinds of issues. But since you have nox issues, your car runs rich and that causes soot too, making it more complex to figure out what's causing what.

I have some money for another injector. Bank 2 is all replaced. Bank 1 is old Index 9.
I try to figure out which one to replace next and I think I will go with the one showing much different opening time compared to the other 5. Also notice how big is the difference between banks now, many adaptations are 10% for bank 1 as compared to bank 2.

Injector 2 is out, new Index 11 is in. Resetting adaptations and going for a drive.
Car was driven about 5 hours earlier, and there was lots of fluid on the end tip of Injector as you can see. Strangely I couldn't smell anything from it, no gasoline smell. I'm not familiar with gasoline to know if parts of it evaporate and the smell disappears over time or not. Weird. I could not see anything else anywhere, no fluids anywhere around and seems like it was just the very tip of Injector. If it's oil then no idea how would it get there.

I just read about this and seems like apart from valve cover gasket issues or cracked valve cover (which causes way more serious leaks), it happens when there was some oil splash or leaking oil cap. Oil then sips down into holes and stays there, then you remove Injector and that happens. My oil cap was leaking and is replaced so I will assume that's that for now.
Injector 2 is now replaced with Index 11, so entire bank 2 is replaced and number 2 in bank 1 is replaced too. Engine re-adapted and we will see how it drives in the coming days. Curious to see if I will still get some rpm jumps or not.

Nice one for updating the thread chris. Interesting to see your progress.
Regarding the liquid - petrol stinks of petrol if it's still wet, so maybe that was oil as you say. Hard to tell from a picture as it depends on consistency. If it was runny like water but didn't smell like petrol I wonder if it could have been condensation. Edit to add I think I read these injectors have oil inside them.. Maybe it leaked out.. |

This injector was old never replaced so if there was anything inside of it it would be gone by now. I assume it's just oil from sloppy refill or from leaky oil cap.
Also, I use this cheap puller tool now, works great, I don't want to wiggle injectors out risking scratching the inside walls which might cause bad seal: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...php?p=25420580

After some driving I can say rpm jumps are now almost gone. At most I have seen just 2 small rpm dips and that's it. Probably I wouldn't notice them if I was not looking for them.
Also interesting to see/feel how engine switches between 3 operating modes homogen, homogen-lean and stratified. For example when coming to stop at red light, engine runs as normal and then there is one small "something" like a tiny jerk and rpm changes and engine sound changes and also the feeling of vibration changes. This could probably be observed live with INPA on menu F9-F1 which shows which mode is currently in use. For example it will never idle in stratified mode if it was not driven first.

I’ve got an n43 that’s running rough but mainly a minute or so after start up (there is no rough idle at start up so discounting for now leaking injectors), when the idle drops to about 700rpm after the cold start it’s just lumpy.
The only error code I get is the nox sulphurisation, and after checking with my Carly app it’s apparent that my nox cat only gets to around 400mg sulphur before the fault codes appears. If I do a forced regen it goes right down to about 80mg but then quickly rises again through the journey, so a 1.5hr drive 65 miles, it’s probably raised again by 100mg. So 2 or 3 journeys and the fault code reappears. Very oddly even with the fault code recorded my car appears to still run stratified mode? Can this be right, the mycarly app shows this? Either way after a regen with no error code the car idles spot on. I just can’t figure out why I get the rough lumpy idle sometimes and not others. Even with new injectors and coils and plugs I get the same lumpy idle. |

Injectors leaking because they do not close properly is just one of many issues they can have, other are not opening properly (too little fuel) or not spraying the mist (just squirting), or not closing fast enough, etc. Also things change with heat, less issues with cold but more when heated up or vice versa.
But you say new injectors so I assume that's not it. I myself today had another case of jumpy rpms, down to below 500 up to 800 or so. It happened after longer drive, then car off for 2 hours, then start up and jumpy rpm. Strangely it doesn't do this when cold start anymore, but it did before I replaced some injectors. That's with 4 brand new injectors, and 2 super old ones. Will have to hook up INPA yet again and do some more monitoring in Rough Run menu.

Has anyone tried sending their data for diagnostic to bimmerproof for 30 euro? Any useful feedback?
I read on their website that if there is a fault code for nox related issues, then the car won’t run stratified mode. Oddly according to mycarly it does have the nox error code (desulphurisation) but it also runs stratified mode? Last edited by Bmw330; 12-08-2019 at 07:56 AM.. |

I wouldn't trust Carly, only INPA or ISTA.
Sadly I never checked if my car was running stratified before I installed NOXEM when I had NOX codes. But the bad mileage suggests it was not running stratified. Also more smell from exhaust, was probably running rich all the time.

Don't ever pay for car software (you're just sponsoring middlemen) and don't get ripped off buying cables too.
https://www.bimmergeeks.net/downloads (INPA, ISTA, etc) By the way, I floored it today and got P0012 camshaft over retarded error. It was one time thing, as I see the code is pending now. I might replace camshaft sensors, they are likely still original.

Hi Chris thanks for the link. I have ista/d installed already and I followed some instructions on the bimmerprofs site I noticed some options (nox sensor adaptations reset and catalyst replacement) are not showing in the submenu. Wondering if I need to update something ? It recognises my car just fine.

I have two separate INPA fodlers, one from bimmergeeks and the other with the above update (when I need to follow bimmerprofs guides)

But if you can't see menus in ISTA, then make sure you are in the right top menu as there is more than one. I was able to do nox sensor and cat replacement in ISTA+ after I got NOXEM installed.

So easy for me to have two separate installations with two different shortcuts for each INPA.
