Pure Stage 2 Install

So the turbo came in and I am mid install. I am FBO minus a catback. I ordered the turbo with the DV+ and the installation kit, I already have the inlet pipe. I have found two different stage 1 guides that will help a little bit. I have attached them for anyone else looking.

**UPDATE** 6/14

So I purchased my turbo from Mike at N54tuning.com on 6/8 and received it today 6/14. Here are some photos of the packaging and the turbo.

So it turns out that I have a newer updated impeller that they are also using on the M2 stage 2 turbos.

***Update 6/20***

Install is on hold till 6/27

So I have everything but the turbo oil and coolant lines removed. I placed an order for a water pump and thermostat replacement that should be in later this week. Before the water pump and thermostat arrive I plan to remove the oil and coolant lines, remove the last nut for the exhaust manifold, and remove the passenger side engine mount. I will swap the part over to the new turbo and install it along with the new DP that I also picked up from Mike@N54tuning. I found out that my rear main seal is leaking so as soon as everything gets put back together I will take it to BMW to see if they will cover it under the CPO. Then I'll update with some logs and videos.

I decided not to embed the youtube videos to save on space in this post. Here are the links on how to install the waterpump and thermostat.

The hardest part for me were the nuts on the manifold. Mine were very easy to turn but extremely difficult to get to. Make sure to get wiggle extensions of various sizes, a swivel, an 11mm flex head ratcheting wrench, and flex head ratchet. Also deep and shallow 11mm sockets. That gives you about every possible combination of angle and distance. These also are easy to cross thread because of the way they tighten. You'll feel resistance whether the nut is on properly or not. Just go slow and if one seems tighter than it should, stop and replace it.

Also get an O2 sensor socket, and 1ft worth of extensions. Just makes the downpipe so much easier.

Make sure you drain the coolant by loosening the slotted inner plug and don't try to turn the green outside portion of it. It will break and you'll dump coolant all over the highway 5 miles from your house.

Great pointers, I appreciate it. I am actually swapping out my DP during the install. Did you have to do anything with the subframe?

You're welcome. Nothing. It might be worth it for Xi cars though.

Make sure you get the torque specs and the sequence for the copper manifold nuts! That part takes a while as some are hard to get to...
I had to remove engine mount on my Xi X1.
You'll love the stage 2!

I will be following this closely... If you put together a DYI specific to the stage 2, you'll be my hero.

I have not. I have been following them since the release of their stage 1. Most of the replies I have seen from them simply state it is the same as a stock turbo swap, which it is. If I run into a snag that I for whatever reason cannot get past I will contact them.

I was more looking for what tools do I need or issues I could expect. Do I need coolant because I will have to drain all of the coolant, things of that nature.

Oh something else I thought of. It costs a few bucks but it might be a good idea to order new oil lines / coolant lines (the ones that come off the turbo). If you're going to get leaks, this is where they'll come from. I had a couple that looked pretty rough when I took them off so I made sure to replace them.

Once you have that bad boy installed and up and running you'll reevaluate your thoughts about the impeller size. Then in a year or so you'll be jacking up the fueling to really feed the beast.

So I reached out to Pure today because the impeller did not look the same as all of the photos I have seen. Here is the response I got back from them.

"Yes, you got our latest updated compressor wheel. Good eye Same as what we used in the M2 recently."

Here is a side by sides for comparison.

How can you even tell the difference? I'm now looking at pictures of mine and can't figure out which one it is.

It was pretty obvious to me. The entire shape is different and the impeller face appears to have what looks like little groves in them. If you look at some of my photos from straight on you will see how they look different.

*EDIT*
You appear to have the original one. I have not heard why the changed happen or what improvements may come from it.

Intercooler next so you can get to that drain plug I referenced that's on the bottom of the radiator. You'll see it once the intercooler is out of the way. I took mine completely out but some say you don't have to. In that first pic I removed the aluminum bracket to the left, and disconnected the bracket for the power steering hose to the left of that. Then zip tied the power steering hose out of the way. I never touched the rack. . Drain coolant, remove thermostat, and water pump, then you're almost there. lol. It's a major job. In the last pic it shows the aluminum coolant tube. It's a bitch to get out. There are only 3 bolts, thank goodness. Once those are removed just wiggle the hell out of it until it breaks free.

EDIT: Oh yeah. Take out the sway bar too. Trying to remember all the stuff that has to be done.

So I have one turbo exhaust manifold bolt left and the turbo coolant and oil lines and she is ready to come out. I have put in about 6 hours at this point and the most difficult step so far was disconnecting one of the quick disconnects on the thermostat. I found the turbo exhaust manifold bolts to be easy to access.

My only question.... Do I pull the turbo out of the top of the engine bay? Do I pull it out of the hole where the DP normally is?
