Limp Mode, Massive Smoke Cloud, Barely Runs
Hi all
Here's the specs on the car first of all 2009 335i automatic Only modification is aftermarket exhaust A few days ago, the car started making a loud whistling noise and sometimes the half shaded CEL would come on but it wouldnt be in limp mode. 2 days ago while driving uphill, it started to struggle. It was bogging down and the acceleration got shaky. Made it to my destination and on the drive home going uphill, it started to struggle really bad huge clouds of smoke pouring out the exhaust, smell of burning oil...then some sparks flew out the back which im guessing is part of the turbo...had it towed home and wanted to drive it into my garage to diagnose but as soon as the car turned on, it was struggling to hold idle and an insane amount of smoke poured out again. Planning on towing it to a shop now but i want to get your opinions on what the issue is and what to expect in terms of damage. I realize that i may have made it a lot worse by continuing to drive it to that point.. |

Big clouds of smoke usually mean a head gasket, Regular OBD readers wont tell you what you need to know. You need the proper scan tool....

Likely causes:
1) Failed turbo seals pumping oil into the exhaust system 2) Failed head gasket The "whistling noise" and very sudden failure would make me suspect a turbo failure. No way to know without tearing it down. If it were mine, I'd be pulling the turbos. They pretty much need to come off before removing the head anyway, if that turns out to be necessary, so it is little or no additional work. Regards, Ray L. |
