DSP and a calculated Center channel
Hello all, I've been searching around for a good DSP to use to create a center channel signal, but all of the diagrams I've seen that include a center channel output for a DSP also include a center input.
Do any of you know of a DSP that will calculate the center from just right/left inputs? I was looking at the following DSP units and their manuals did not make this clear to me. AudioControl LC8i (among their other processors) The Rockford Fosgate 3Sixties the Memphis Car Audio processors the ones from Zapco Ideally, if the LC8i can do it, I would be set with just the one component for all of my processing. I would hate to need an extra piece just to make a center channel. Last edited by DeFKnoL; 03-04-2010 at 11:14 AM.. |

The LC8i is not a processor, it is a line output converter. The Memphis "processors" are either analog EQ or crossover networks. |

Thanks.
It looks like the 3SIXTY.2 is also a line converter as it takes high level speaker inputs. Can you think of any reason why it can't make a good replacements of the LC8 - other than the diference in channel capability? As far as the Signal conditioning is concerned. I'm not too interested in stuff like the remote. Last edited by DeFKnoL; 03-04-2010 at 10:46 AM.. |

The LC8i is not a processor, you keep comparing apples to apple pie á la mode.

Sorry for the bad comparison. I meant to say that the 3SIXTY appears to have a line conditioner in it. I realize (since you pointed it out earlier) that the LC8 is not a DSP.
My understanding at this point is that the LC8 simply conditions the signal (changes speaker signals to pre-amp levels) while the 3SIXTY does the same and also is a DSP as well (does time delays/levels and calculates a center channel signal from Right and Left). When I said replace, I meant that since I was interested in a DSP and needed a line conditioner as well, I could just get a 3SIXTY and that would take care of both needs in one unit. Is that a correct assumption? |

If you're gonna do it, the MS-8 should be far better at center channel logic than ANY of the ones available now. Should ship in a couple months, they are prepping the dealers already with private PPT slideshows.

depending what audio system you have (L7 or base), the 360 may not be a good solution, as it only has 6 high level inputs - front, rear, center and sub (mono). you need to sum the sub channels in stereo since they are also performing midbass duties. This is not the case if you have the base system though, as you only have 4 channels to run into it anyhow, and it will work fine for what you want.
