Damn, that is a shaky ass video.
Would it be possible to have a custom cable made up to remote the controller to a more accessible location? The BMW Engineer who located the controller under the intake must be a moron. |

sorry I didn't have a film crew..
moving it would be pointless if it needs to be changed you could see it can be done with one hand and recording a video in less than 7 minutes. the failure rate for this part is not "high" although it does need to be replaced from time to time. you would not need a custom cable all you would need to do is cut and extend then you could move it to the glove box inside the car. if you think that is a bad location it sounds like you have not worked on many cars.... I think that spot is great lol. |

Well it has been a full week since I have replaced my module! little update
car has been driven 300+ miles no SES since Previous code was only 1 *P0675* which states that glow plug #5 isn't working. my NT510 scanner says it shows open. I will open the old GPM and investigate the failure. I know which pin is for GP#5, so I will be focused in that area. |

Ha... So I figured I'd try this today before it gets too cold up here (6ºC today).
I got the small round connector off, but then when trying to remove the large connector, the thumb press broke off on one side, and I can't really reach around to the back to try the other side. I can't quite seem to get in to put the small round connector back either. So this has turned into a mission. |

Glow plug module changed this morning. Bought it from IDparts for $110. Took about 30 minutes using this video.
Thanks again for making for the group. Hardest parts were getting the larger plug off and putting the smaller one on. A tip for reinstall, start the larger plug before you put the GPM in place. Its wires are so short, it'll be tough to put on after the GPM is tightened. The small one is just very hard to get to or see because of tight quarters. It was really nice not having to take off the intake or any coolant lines to do this. |

By far this was the hardest part for me. Took walking away a few times and using 2 fingers, 2 lights and luck to slide it back in. |

At one point I considered moving the positive battery cable that runs over the top of the engine, and so I removed the 13mm nut on the passenger side. Unfortunately I dropped that bolt and can't find it. Tomorrow I'll remove the belly pan to get the nut. I think I can "almost" get it done, but need the car for the weekend. Next week is another story. The saga continues. |

I’m in the process of finally doing my e70 module. This is a SHITTY job. Doesn’t help that at 7 when I started, it was already 85 with 100% humidity, and it’s up to 92 at 9am with the same humidity still. Just spent 2 hours alone getting the big connector unclipped. I ended up having to remove both positive cables from the starter, unclipping just about ever hose so I could get the angle needed, and then experimenting for 2 hours with different approaches to getting the rear clip off. I could t reach it from above so I had to go below, and all the squeezing in the world didn’t seem to get it to unclip. Finally I climbed on top of my front cross bar to get the angle needed to get at it from aboveboard the connectors bundle of words and finally got it off. Theconnector doesn’t look so great anymore but as long as it makes connection, I don’t care. Next time my thermostat goes, I’m parking the car and driving the drift car until the thermostat gets fixed. Enough of a pain in the freaking ass that I really, really don’t want to do this again.
I’m not even done, I just got the connectors unclipped! Now to unbolt it..... |

I completed this. Afetr getting the single stubborn connector off, it was easy going. But man, my hands are still super beat up, 2 days later. Lots of cuts healing up!
But, the CEL is off for the first time since buying the car, which is awesome. Going for inspection later today! Wanted to point out that my X5 was slightly different. My dipstick tube had a different shape slightly, and I really had to push it around to be able to reach the controller.

It's good to know you got this done on the X5 without removing the intake manifold. I've had a controller sitting in my garage for a couple months! |

Just adding my 2 cents as I used this very helpful video as well on my 335D. I had no problem getting the small round connector on or off, but struggled with the big square connector. Tip 1 - make sure you've really squeezed both unlock tabs. One made an audible click, one did not. Tip 2 - I put on a mechanics glove which increased my grip substantially making my 2nd attempt successful.
I did not reset any codes and the CEL went out on its own in a few days after replacing the module. |
