SAT installed but not showing on radio
Hi. 2 posts in one day, I am definitely abusing my privileges!
I have an e90 with the SAT unit in the trunk, but the radio shows SAT with two dashes above it. I looked in the trunk and the unit is there but the sound/power cable was disconnected and the fiber optic was jumpered. I plugged it in to the unit and no luck. Any thoughts? EDIT: Also, two fuses, 31 and 83 that appear to be associated with the radio in the fuse diagram, are empty. |

More than likely the SAT unit in the trunk had failed and the prior owner had bypassed it. I had to do the same as with my case it made the entire system inoperable.

Thank you. It actually looks like it's from the factory since it's a fancy little fiber optic loop. I'm curious what goes into the two radio fuse slots that are empty. 81 and 83. Anyway I guess I'll just have to put a radio in this one is nearly black after 10 minute ride. Any advice?

It's common for Sat modules to blowup.
You can buy them on Ebay . There may be some programming involved or you at least must establish a subscription. The previous guy bypassed the module according to your description who know's if he pulled the fuse. You can send the Radio out to get the display fixed. I assume you are talking about the pro radio and not the idrive. If you get a new or used new Radio it has to be programmed to your car's options. Getting the display fixed can be the easier option as programming can be difficult depending on the year of the car. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ighlight=pixel http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=761513 If your Radio is working the only thing you should think about regrading fuses is the Sat module if you replace it. There is a fuse chart behind the glove box panel. This can be hard to read because of the ICON's First entry in link may help you . Last edited by ctuna; 11-26-2021 at 10:04 AM.. |

Thank you for all of the helpful info!
I do have the professional, not iDrive. What are my options in so far as replacing the radio with after market? I see a lot of post about double din/android auto, but few about just an old school radio with bluetooth? I have installed dozens of car stereo's in my life, mostly VW, but the BMW intimidates me. |

Yes you should be slightly intimidated.
Cars made after 2000 and even some before have the stereo highly integrated into the rest of the car. Just because there are empty fuse slots doesn't mean something should go there . Most likely it's just options that haven't been installed. Year of the car and options installed from the factory is something you should establish right away. Use Mdecoder.com to see what it came with. If you want questions answered intelligently here always state the year of the car and motor type at minimum. (also country you are in) There are a lot of things that you should be aware of before installing and aftermarket head unit and some side effects you should be aware of. You need to understand the whole system before you mess with it, First you have to know which sound system you have and this does not mean which Head Unit you have. If you have the Logic 7 system it requires a analog to fiberoptic adapter. Additionally you will get an SOS error and any Most Bus modules such as the Sat module and the bluetooth/Sos/USB modules will not work. PDC may cease to work if you have that. Also alarms come through the stereo so they will cease to work. These errors can be programmed out or bypassed with the proper harness. Bmw dealerships may refuse to service your car since there diagnostic choke without the original configuration. If you want to do this stuff you should do research at the stereo sub forum here. https://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27 BMW stereo types http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352586 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...2&d=1266451970 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...2&d=1260829447 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1209780865 http://bmwcoders.com/forum/3-er-8/bm...1-e92-e93-291/ http://technicpnp.com/menuDiagrams/d...e90_92_93.html http://www.musicarnw.com/page-2/ http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...3&d=1169133185 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1209780605 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641323 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...4&d=1278871872 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343673 https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/e...n-752.1275694/ base system wiring pre/post 3/09 https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...tDpLJPcGkw_ui_ Base System Guide http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...5&d=1493273253 Last edited by ctuna; 11-26-2021 at 05:04 PM.. |

The retrofit is actually quite simple. The factory unit is an Alpine and is very high-quality. No need to swap it out... |

Thanks everyone. Here is my VIN multimedia breakdown:
Multimedia S640 Preparation F Tel.Installation Universal S645 BMW US Radio S655 Satellite Tuner S663 Radio BMW Professional S676 HiFi Speaker System S694 Provisions For BMW 6 CD Changer I don't see any component that shows Bluetooth in the car. I do see the satellite receiver in the trunk, but there are some cabling next to it and an empty bay. That appears to have had some sort of multimedia device. It has a fiber optic connectors. I don't really want to go too crazy with this, I bought a nice Bluetooth adapter USB style that turns on and off with the car. The radio does fade out to almost invisible after 15 minutes. |

S640 is the prep for bluetooth - the wiring is for the bluetooth module (which can also handle an iPod interface). It’s "looped out” with a fiber optic bypass loop from the factory. The SAT module is known to go bad - seems like yours is given that looping it back into the system didn’t change things either. You have S676, the Hifi system with an analog amp, which is why your sound still works. When you say your radio fades out, I assume you mean the display and not the radio sound itself? The display can be easily replaced. For Bluetooth/iPod, you have 4 options (5 if you include a non-OEM solution, like the bluetooth -> FM transmitter you mentioned earlier): 1. Install a TCU module - this enables Bluetooth for phone calls only. 2. Install a MULF2 module - this a multimedia module - allows for Bluetooth calls and a physical iPod interface (using a combo aux/USB cable which terminates in a Lightening or 30-PIN dock connector, works with iPods/iPhones) 3. Install a Combox - my understanding is this won’t give you Bluetooth audio streaming as that’s only available for iDrive CIC equipped cars. 4. Replace the Professional CD73 headunit with a later one which includes Bluetooth in the actual radio unit itself. To restore SAT functionality, you can purchase a SAT module from eBay. Most recent part-number is 65129278266. Fits quite a few vehicles - see here for the entire list. As a coda: the later Professional headunits do have the SAT module built in, but I’m pretty sure it’s VIN coded to the car, so unless there’s a cost-effective way to generate a FSC code for it, finding a known-good SAT module on eBay is probably the best way to go. |

Some of the the newer Pro Radios have Bluetooth phone and Sat Radio
integrated into the Radio. Genraly found in Europe . There is more detailed info on this kind of stuff on the Stereo sub forum here. You have to search for it. Also replacing the Radio requires programming for a New one. TCU =Bluetooth phone and SOS Mulf 2 Hi = Can do bluetooth phone and USB Combox = Bluetooth phone , USB and streaming bluetooth with the right Nav/idrive. |
