so I got ista working again.

there are no cam/crank issues.
I replaced the plugs today just because and put back in my matching delphi coil.
Everything looks fine in ista.

This is all remarkably similar to when the ESS failed last, so I unplugged it.

Miss goes away. car works fine.

So, it looks like this is early stages of ESS failure again. Was really hoping that when I bought the OE part 2 years ago I wouldn't be doing it again for some time.

So I'll order new ESS and valve cover gaskets and get to it sometime. For now the ESS connector is unplugged and covered with a nitrile glove.

Remove your upper intake DISA flap assembly. It's probably broken. The flap usually is sitting on the back on the intake valve.

is that the inside one or the outside one?

I suppose I should pop that outside one off and have a look in there.

but if that were the problem I'd assume it would remain with the ESS unplugged as well.
