NHSTA tire recall
Idk how many of you have these tires. But, I just received this in my email today.
I was just about to buy some continental tires . How do tire recalls actually work? Do you get free tires or something? |

I do believe recalled tires are replaced free. Then the shop that removes them are supposed to puncture the sidewall, but remember the Firestone thing where they all ended up for sale on the secondary market....
Recalls are odd...the Michelins which came with my wife's 2011 GM SUV all dry rotted. Michelin recalled them, but excluded her production date hahahahahahaha As if say a tire produced 2/25/19 gets replaced free, 3/14/19 not, and both are dry rotted on 2/25/21. btw for the first time ever in 2020, we got a pro-rata warranty on Michelins because they wore to 2/32 in 43k and were warranted to 60k. We got a pretty much spot on credit and we actually got the same tire because Michelin has since increased the tread depth to 10/32, up from 8.5/32.... |

It actually says in the notification you posted that "The tires will be inspected to verify that they are affected, and will be replaced as necessary, free of charge."

Oh crap. I JUST got General G-MAX AS-05s put on in December. And I really, really like them. Hopefully they're not affected as I really don't feel like dragging the car in....

Good point because we took my wife's to the dealer who verified not covered under the recall. My point is dry rot is dry rot--it's there, or it's not there. So because the recall covered only to 4 weeks prior to her production date on the tires, I thought was stupid, but they have to cut costs somehow!

Anyway just 4 years later all the tires are now starting to dry rot which I had not experienced in socal since we have pretty moderate temps. Not only that but we are getting extremely close to the wear indicators at only 45K for a 65K mileage warranty. I am always religious with tire rotations at the 5K mile mark and have the proof of it. Worst of all, Michelin doesn't consider dry rot a defect and will not warranty them for dry rot, so for now we just have to wait until they get to 3/32 for warranty. I am very disappointed in Michelin tbh especially because my wife and kids ride in that car on a regular basis. |
