$900 for lowering spring installation?
ive been to 2 different shops near Atlanta that are quoting me ~$900 for installation of lowering springs. I just wanted to get some feedback and see if this is the proper price that is usually charged for others when doing this.

Honestly after the battle I went through to DIY my shock/spring install, I'd probably pay $900 to have someone else deal with it, but that does seem high.

It can be a huge pain espescially the fronts. Ive done 3 for mine and friends now. Install time has dropped from 9,7,5 hrs but still lots of cussing throughout.
$900 sounds high. If they are including alignment and other plates etc. it could be right. But base install in Atlanta I was quoted $725 & $650

I think I paid $175 at LTMW. $900 is insane.

Rears are stupid easy. Front....you be disassembling the struts. Not rocket sci, and $900 at the high high end, but hey - you need equipment to do it easily. Uh, are your shocks matched to your springs, and why would you want lowering springs anyway? |

Who quoted you $900? Jw because I want to upgrade my suspension next year too, but def gonna stay away from those places! Did you check with markert motorworks? They seem to have a pretty good reputation around here. Also, I've had Carma Motorsports do a lot of work on my beemers. They have always been very reasonable and do great work!

Are you saying that is a quote for labor only?? That is more than twice the cost I've been quoted before. Try Solo Motorsports in Norcross. I'm probably going to go there shortly to get a suspension upgrade on my car (~83K miles).

I paid $500 for M3 controls, front/rear shocks and springs installed with alignment out in NY. I've been quoted outrageous prices like $1600 before. Fuck those prices and find somewhere else. Just because it's a BMW does not mean you need to pay stupid prices.

In all seriousness, I don't find it that surprising. A lot of dealers/shops out there these days prey on uneducated customers.
I was quoted 11 hours of labor to just to change the front control arms before... lol, my gf's family was suggested with a $9000 transmission change for their Honda, while the problem is just a $50 valve in the valve body that takes 1/2 hour to change... If everyone does their research like us, these kind of shop wouldn't be in business.

I would look for a tuner shop that charges a flat rate. It looks like the higher prices are shops that charge by the hour, which can get expensive.

I'm curious like the others, what shops here quoted you those crazy rates? Did you call 2 different dealerships? Can't imagine any other shop saying $900.
There's nothing about the E9X suspension that's really any different than any other car. Front is struts so they have to compress the spring, remove the top cap and install new ones. But a ton of other cars use struts in front as well and the process is pretty much the same. Rears are even easier since the shock/spring are separate so you don't even need to take the top cap off the shock. It shouldn't take a competent shop more than 2 to 3 hours at most to do the entire job. And 3 is being generous. I've seen shops do similar work in 90 minutes if they're motivated. So most shops bill $85-$125 an hour. Even so, if I saw anything much over $300 it's just a ripoff. $900 would be basically 8 hours of labor. On a previous car, I paid $900 to install a Vortech SC (9 hours). That's just a little more involved than springs. I've done most of my own suspension work over the years but a couple of times I was lazy and paid ($150 and $225 respectively). I called a bunch of places over the years and can't remember getting a quote for over $300 for any car. As others have said, try Solo or Markert. Or anyone who actually works on BMW's, the quote will be more reasonable. |
