2012 335i n55 OFHG
What's up guys, so I've been monitoring my car after I noticed a little oil spot ( literally a dot ) on my charge pipe and I narrowed it down to my OFHG going bad.
I've called a few shops and bmw dealers around to have an idea of the costs and the dealers are charging 1000 with 2 year warranty while a special BMW only Indy shop charging 500 with 1 year warranty. Here's the problem, i called 5 local bmw dealers, 2 said they prime the engine after the job and 2 said they don't..... one didn't even know how to answer the question he kept putting it off, mind you these are all service advisors. The Indy shop told me they do at least 5 OFHG jobs a week and do prime the engine. I saw the DIY videos, while it don't seem to hard to follow, I just don't want to ruin my 45k miles mint motor, and I'd like to have the warranty. If you were in my shoes, what would you do ? |

I watch the videos a few times, order the gasket and do it myself.
No guarantee that the guy doing the job is any better than you. |

If it were me, I would DIY and not prime the engine.
Why? Because it's what I've always done and had no issues. Nobody knows what makes this happen sometimes but I've had luck with this so it's what I'd do again if I had an n55 with a leak. |

BMW disagrees with you and requires priming after OFHG change per TIS.

Again, that's my opinion. There is no guarantee regardless of what you do that your engine will not seize. This is what worked for me, YMMV. |

Dealerships are using last several years strictly FE oils and that is when all this started. |
