I cloned my MSV70 DME

I couldn't resist - I have all the tools (BDM) and know how, so why not?

$75 test subject picked up off ebay (from a 2006 530i):


that white goopy stuff is seriously annoying. I'm guessing it's some sort of heatsink compound - even slighting touching it will get it all over your fingers. ugh.

also the other side of the board I hadn't seen before, some seriously large capacitors:


Perhaps to drive the valvetronic motor? that's my guess.

Added BDM header, did a full dump just to have a backup:


Pulled my DME. People say to unplug the battery, but my experience is that's actually a bad idea. the DME won't care, but you'll reset every other module in the car. just be careful and for god's sake don't try to turn it on, lol.

Upload to the test mule:


Now this is the part I wasn't sure about. Would the CAS need re-aligned? Would I have to recalibrate anything? the answer is no! I plugged my original DME in first to make sure it would start, and it fired right up. Then I swapped it with the test mule, crossed my fingers (after spending 10 minutes looking for my key), and it fired right up as well!



next I'm going to cut a hole in the case of the test DME, make a longer ribbon cable and then I can write to it from inside the car without having to take it out. If I ever want to go back to stock all I have to do is put the original DME back in, but as far as the car can tell, it's exactly the same anyway.

and now that I have a dump of my stock maps, it's time to start digging and tweaking.

I think people are too afraid of these cars, seriously. The turbo motors are always going to get all the attention from tuners and the aftermarket - but there's lots left on the table of the N/A motors, and I doubt any of the big tuners have done anything new in some time. it's like we're perpetually stuck in 2007.

and fortunately for us, BMW didn't lock these things up like MSS60 and the newer ones that are all encrypted.

I intend to. My wife's E91 325xi could use a bump in torque/hp.

now to figure out how to sneak her DME out so I can clone it too... lol

there are other things I want to do, I think the engine is a bit nerf'd just after 6500rpm. it seems like it falls way harder on it's face than it should, I don't think it's VE related, I think BMW purposely cuts timing and fuel, sort of a soft rev limit. I also think a lot of the adaptations are extra aggressive to deal with people who run 87 octane.

There's a billion maps/settings, but just perusing I saw the DISA activation stages, rev limits, top speed limit, injector constants, maximum ignition retard maps, etc. I didn't specifically see valve lift yet but it's in there somewhere.

what does what do? I took a used DME and made a clone of my original DME. now I have 2 that I can swap into my car. One to tinker with and one that I can rely on to get me to work on Monday morning if (when) something goes wrong.

Just did a quick compare between the 530i and 330i maps. Basically 80% the same but the 530i was an automatic so that's probably where most of the differences are.

From looking at all these N series dyno s over the last year, the 325i looks to cut lift/power after 6300RPM - but I don't believe there ia much left on the table. I would be surprised if you picked up 4whp over an existing tune. Headers and valvetiming changes are probably be the big gainers anyhow.

I checked them after i flashed it and they were all fine. Did you modify anything? I flashed 3 different chips.

Maybe, I'd like to log the DME while on a dyno. It feels like it should pull strongly all the way to 7000rpm.

WinOLS? How much did you pay for the cables and data for the MSV70 and 80?

no. When you flash the full dump from the original DME, it erases everything on the clone during that process. It's like copy and paste from one DME to another, albeit a little more complicated than that.

virginizing would be a difference process. You'd have to know what sectors of each memory chip to zero out. but since you can copy everything verbatim from one to the other, there's not really any point in doing that.

Newer software, slightly different hardware. I'm pretty sure you can do the same thing with msv80, as long as it has a working bdm port.
