320d turbo

Driving home tonight had a sudden loss of power a whining noise on acceleration, pulled over looked under bonnet and all I could see was a bright orange glow from around the turbo , so looks like a new one is in order . Got RAC recovery home and they will get it to garage on Monday, just wondered if turbos on the e90 320d are a common failure and anyone got an idea of how much it’s likely to cost?

sorry about that mate! is it under warranty? if not think a new turbo and fitting is about 2k-2.5k from a stealer

how many miles has your car done?

I have got a warranty on it from Warranty wise (had one with them on my M3 and they paid out for a new diff no problem so fingers crossed) it's 95k so the warranty will only pay a percentage, won't be going to the stealers got a indy that I use and trust.

Sorry to hear that... mine did the same thing: loss of power, then a 'whining'. I pulled over and called BMW Emergency and they said it was okay to drive. I managed without the turbo and got it to the garage (where it is now). They're fixing it on Monday (if you didn't get the last turbo before me!). They're also replacing the exhaust which got trashed with oil. It might be worth asking them to check if they haven't, as it should be covered under the warranty.

I never opened the bonnet. An orange glow would have freaked me out!

Good luck with it.

The loss of power was dramatic just driveable managed to get into services 1/2 mile away, looking today in the daylight the glowing looks like it was from the exhaust/cat so looks like a fait bit of oil went through.

...strange thing was, a few days before I had a loss of power and a warning light (DSR I think). I pulled over and called BMW Emergency. They got me to turn the ignition off, then on again. No warning light came back on and it drove fine. I went to the dealer and got them to do a quick check and they said it was a 'blip' of some sort (?) It's got a service soon, I'm going to get them to have a really good look.

When the turbo went I had enough power to drive okay... it was just the engine with no boost. BTW my car has done about 56,000 miles.

(Sorry - I meant DSC, not DSR, whatever that is...)

Didn't any warn lights at all, in fact no warning at all it was running fine and as smooth as ever then just as if the engine had been turned off then a low pitched whine.

Getting it taken into the garage tomorrow so should know what it's going to cost, Best make sure I'm sitting down when they tell me

Depends what we mean when we say our turbo went. Some go out in glory, oils seals gone and suck/blow out the engine oil. Hence all the smoke. Some with or without the siren sounds. Others are not blown, but just don't work, usually as the variable vanes are either in default position, typically caused by external problems, or jammed/choked with carbon.

Don't think my warranty will pay for an upgrade, although I might see if the indy will invoice as a standard one

That's not too bad! I just got mine back (under warranty). They replaced lots of stuff because of oil contamination... the front half of the exhaust and part (?) of the catalytic converter. There was a loooong list of bits.

So good to get the car back!

Gah. Mine lost power randomly the other day, and then came back!

Terrified now. Done 200 miles on it since too.

Going to call coopers cobham and speak to one of them, get some advice i think ...
