Interior: SPec Dock- iphone

Hey guys sorry if youve seen this already i just figured it belonged in this category..

So my latest mod is in!!! I was searching and searching for some way to charge my iphone or iphone as well as listen to the music off it while spending less than some stupid amount of money like 800$. The new Spec Dock Simple does everything I want and only cost 150$

EDIT DIY GUIDE IS UP: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=302774 Let me know what you think!!

EDIT #2 Link to buy it: http://stores.homestead.com/2point5/...POD/Detail.bok

Now to charge my phone I was looking at the charger for the glove compartment. The thing was I couldnt see myself putting my phone in there while I was driving and I also wouldnt be able to listen to any music from it.

I could have connected it to my AUX port but I didnt want to have to look down into my armrest to change a song. I dont think thats very safe at all. I also could have run a long wire out of the arm rest and used a charger in the cigarette lighter but thats too many wires and I like my car to look clean.

There were a lot of iDrive ipod integration kits but they were all REALLY expensive and involved bmw to reprogram my car which would have cost ANOTHER hundred bucks.

I got the Spec Dock in the mail this morning and started right away. Installation took me about 2 hours and I think it looks SUPER clean. I am going to make a DIY very soon and I will post the link up once I Do it. It wasnt hard at all and works like a charm. The best thing about it is i Now have a place to put my cell phone! This dock charges my phone and plays all my songs through the AUX input. I can control the volume from my steering wheel and changing songs is done on the ipod or iphone itself (the "next" button is just about as far away as the iDrive knob).

Edit: I forgot to add that the AUX cable can connect through the bottom or the AUX port so that you dont even see it. I decided to go another route because Im not very comfortable with wiring. Anyone with wiring experience could do it! Another thing is that the picture looks like if i shifted up to 1st, 3rd, or 5th, id hit my iphone with my hand but I dont even come close.

Email Matt Turner: matt@2point5.com for ordering info..real nice dude

Hope you guys enjoy I really Let me know what you guys think!!!
Thanks

So this specific version is targeted for those without 6FL. Is there a version of the dock that is just sort of a pass-through for the dock connector? I dont care for the location of the 6FL (armrest) and a dock solution would make it a cleaner relocate...

EDIT: Checked website. The answer is yes.

Nice. But I'd be worried about flooring it from a stop and breaking that connector off.

From the DIY:

"Now to supply the power to charge your iPod or iPhone you need to splice into the Power and ground wire that gives the cigarette lighter its power. Obviously sodering the wires together would be the best option but I dont have a lot of experience with that so I spliced into the wires and then electric taped them to hold em. You need to splice into the THICK power and ground wire in order for it to supply enough power.

SPEC DOCK POWER (RED) Connects to RED AND BLACK THICK WIRE
GROUND (BLACK) connect to BROWN THICK WIRE (cut off the circle connector off spec ground)
"

hmmm interesting. its too bad they just don't wire it with the cig power to plug into the slot next to the aux out in the arm rest. thats what I have right now, just nowhere to mount it.

and $150 sounds like this guy or company is making a fortune off of $6 in parts to make this stuff

Or long term wear on the dock connector from vibration in an upright position.

I bought one with the OEM pass through. The y-cable plugs into it. I also bought a USB y-cable power adaptor so I draw power from the power port in the glove box. It works great and I get iphone charging. I have a 3GS by the way. After I first installed it my phone did rock a bit but was secure. I fix that by getting a case for my iPhone, which made the iphone not fit in the base plate because it was to big with the case. So I sanded the white base plate to open it enough to fit. Now there is no rocking or movement. I like it a lot. It is spendy but it is completely hidden when not in use and easy to access when needed.

The DIY is the same as b1gmac88 just the connection for the OEM cable plugs directly into the factory y-cable.

Here is my phone with the case. It is a tight fit with the case. I just need to dye it black.

I have my cables plugged in the glove box. One for power, one for USB and one for audio. There is enough room to hid everything in the consol for a really clean look but I wanted access to the ports incase I wanted to plug something else in down the road and they don’t get in my. For the way I use my iphone it works great.

On a side note, The iphone does not have an antenna port for using an external antenna so I bought a Passive antenna from wpsantennas.com (http://www.wpsantennas.com/wa-1029-a...naadapter.aspx) and I had a custom cable made from a seller on ebay (rfsupplier_com) so I could plug it into the car antenna. The cable I had made is a “FME female to Fakra Jack "A" pigtail cable” It was only $8. The antenna is mounted just under the Spec.Dock connector. I have no idea if it works, I have 5 bars around my house with the phone by itself. Next time Im out of town I’ll know. But the parts were $30 so I figure I’ll see what happens.
