CA cars can be locked with engine running

Did you know that if you have CA with key in your pocket, you can leave the car, press the lock button while the engine is running. You can unlock again and continue driving without a problem.

This is clever!

I myself have been trying to figure out how far the key fob has to be from the vehicle before it shuts itself down. For example, upon exiting, the iDrive screen will display a message about the key not being in the cabin, suggests there may be a malfunction, etc... but will it actually shut off the engine if the fob strays far enough with the engine running and specifically with the doors unlocked? So far I've only walked 3-4 houses away and that wasn't enough...

it will not shut off the engine, but once you turn it off and the key is away from the car, you can't start it. it would be dangerous if the key is gone and the car shuts off in the middle of the road, you wouldn't be able to pull over safely

Not quite, thekewl1 -- if you shut off or stall the car without the key in it, it gives you 10 seconds to start it up again without the key. After the car has been off for 10 seconds, you need the key. This is in the manual on p. 36.

I have plenty of experience testing the limits of CA.

I posted my experience after I left my car on, for 3 hours, in the parking lot of a bar. Thankfully every thing was ok.

Same thing happened to me:

I got out of the car at Bank of America and it was a noisy street. I walked a considerable distance and when I opened the car after locking it, I noticed the engine was running.

It really freaked me out.

I'm not sure that you should be able to lock a car with it running.....

Unless you live in a really cold climate, why would one, without some warning indicator, want to be able to walk away from a car and leave it running?

Larry in Los Angeles (Where a running car is just an invitation for a joy ride .... LOL )

Even then, having to get all dressed up and trudging outside in the snow just to start the car, lock it, and go back inside for 15 minutes isn't the greatest concept either. One would want a remote starter for that.
