Standard running temperature displayed by hidden menu is 90 - 93 degrees C. Standard opening temperature of main stat is 88 degrees

Interesting input.
I haven't seen mine hit 90 yet. High 80s in traffic but when on the motor way it sits in the 70s. I haven't seen any particular change in fuel consumption either, still sitting around 500 per tank. |

That's pretty good mileage for a tank! I get around 350-400. You must do a fair few motorway miles?

How do you check the temp? I know there are posts but even with searching I couldn't find it (no doubt my stupidity will be highlighted.....)

The coolant temp is menu 07.00. That link lists some other useful menus as well, such as battery voltage. |

DPF regens require a minimum set temperature ( not seen an actual figure as yet but certainly higher than 80c whilst running at +40 mph.[past experience]) . When they go to regen it causes the temp to go to circa 96C .. if you've never seen 94,95,96 whilst cruising ... then your DPF hasn't seen a regen. for the cost of having both the EGR and Main stat changed it's a no brainer. |

my previous one ran at 86 when the egr stat went it dropped to around 72 along with a loss of about 5mpg. the temp would sometimes rise to 90-100 on a steep hill and seemed in general pretty erratic.

An average tank for me is anywhere between 470-520 miles.

Today I decided to change my main thermostat and to be honest is wasn't even that difficult.
I should really have done a how to/DIY guide but I wanted it done as soon as I could. Took her for a spin afterwards and the temperature now sits at 92/93c which is awesome. |

I'd just get BMW ones.
The temp should never really drop below 88 once hot. Cold temperature and AC can make it seem like something's wrong but probably isn't as long as it does hit 88 and not drop much after. |

I replaced both thermostat, purchased from ECP and went for the more expensive. The EGR thermostat was made by the same company and just had BMW scratched off for licensing purposes. However the main stat was not an "OE" from the same manufacturer but will be fine all the same.

There's a possible drop but the thermostats should shut at 88c, meaning there's no effective cooling happening. The heater is still drawing heat from the engine so it's worth doing the test with the AC off, temp set to 16 and fans off, as having the heating AC on could be dropping it a few degrees.
It's a lot easier to test in summer than winter. |
