ignore them. they are supposed to brilliant..I'm really trying to get the wife to swap out her MINI Cooper S for one in black (as long as I can get a bike or two in the back). However I can see another MCS or maybe the sensible choice--> Golf GTI

I had a MKV GTI, before it got stolen, and it was a great car, especialy as it was remapped to 250BHP, and was a match for most cars. And its value didnt plummet like most cars.

Then I got the R32.....

No March 2006, 200BHP model(thats what the MKV stands for), the 1.8T isnt a proper GTI - Its a slow slug

I thought you knew about cars? It has the 2.0TFSI engine in it, which has won World engine of the year a couple of years running. It is in TT, Golf GTI, Leon Cupra, Audi S3 (the last two are modified)

i test drove the new Cupra - quite quick and a remap gets you 315bhp, shame they look pig ugly from the front and the interior plastics are a worse grade than a budget laptop

Its just that the 2.0TFSI engine was the most talked about engine when it was released in 2005, a completely lagless turbo 4 pot, and strong as an ox, probably hence why it won the awards

The reviews all say the R26 is a great hot hatch, probably the best you can get without paying silly money. I took the original 225 (a way inferior car) for a test drive and was reasonably impressed - it was pretty quick and handled well.

However, it is a Renault, which means:

- It will depreciate, a lot
- There will be mysterious creaks and rattles appearing within 6 months, which you will never track down
- The driving position is likely to be a little too high up, and the steering, clutch and gearbox a little too light (the R26 may be an exception with its modifications)
- It probably won't be hugely reliable
- Real world fuel economy on the R26 is apparently in the low 20's mpg, according to owners

My wife and her whole family love Renaults, for their soft ride, light controls and high-up driving position - exactly the reason I hate them (with the possible exception of Renaultsport models).

A good place to check out the R26 is to go to the official Renaultsport Website (www.renaultsport.co.uk) and log into the forums, where owners seem to give reasonably honest and not too heavily moderated opinions.

Just a thought - £18k will get you a used 130i. With 265bhp and rear wheel drive, it is probably an impressive GTI-basher if you can live with the limited interior space.

Nice post ... I'm test driving it out of interest really, because it sounds like a lot of car for the money and it seems to be way ahead of the competition largely because of the LSD.

i drove one and it immense.

If i didnt run a business and had to drive a more sensible car to see clients, and a more expensive car to show the lads im doing alright then i would have one in an instant.

On the depriciation aspect you wont lose any more money than you would in a 335d.

i expect to lose at least 20k in 3 years on my car.

the renualt might lose 10-12k

Your a bunch of badge snobs.....just like me
