N54 increasing power question

I have an 07 335i sedan. My turbos got shot and I’m about to put some upgrades turbos, nothing too crazy just wanting around 450-500whp is good enough for me. My N54 is about to hit 150k miles and one of my friends is telling me I should change the timing chain. Thoughts?

Why? What evidence is there at all that the timing chain needs replaced?

None, my engine runs fine no leaks or anything but I told him I wanted to upgrade my turbos and he said only on the fact the motor is high mileage it could blow the chain/head

None, his mom had a stock 335i convertible for a bit. He’s knowledgeable when it comes to cars though and he just got me a little worried.

Yeah don't touch the timing chain.

Id grab a set of DAW 750RS turbos. Can't beat them for the money and get a custom tune along with intercooler + downpipes same time and youre gold.

My best (and many others will agree) advise for you is to start doing a lot of reading and research....read a lot, investigate and check parts and where to get them, which ones are better and make you own conclusions. At 150k miles if you read at least 5 minutes about the platform you'll know that you need to do a lot more than just 'more powah baby'.

No need to touch the timing chain but definitely make sure everything else is in order.

Then you can tell him the timing chain is about the last thing to be concerned about with the N54. That goes for all of the motor internals, for the most part. It's all of the shit bolted to the motor and interior electronics that are "problematic". By that, I mean it's a relatively high maintenance platform, compared to something like a Honda/Toyota/Ford/Chevy...but, still not as troublesome as others. If you're thinking about a BMW, read, read, read the forums. Then read some more.

I don't think I've ever read about an N54 timing chain going bad unless the belt got sucked into the crank.

Go with Rob Beck RB 2's. If you pay cash (check or cashiers check), he will give you $300.00 off. Those will put you at 450 to 500hp with the right bolt ons.

Dang I just now saw everyone’s replies loll my bad everyone, so if I am increasing power like that what would I have to look out for? I know the stock auto trans can handle up to 500wtq before slipping. Also the mods currently on the car is just packs from Igor, vrsf chargepipe with turbo smart bov, pinnacle specialty performance 7” stepped intercooler, and VRSF catless downpipes with MHD stage 1 I was at MHD stage 2+ but then the turbos messed up. I was looking at the dynamic autoerkz (or however you spell it) stage 2 hybrid turbos. Looking to make probably like 450whp don’t want to get close to the 500 mark because I’m not trying to mess up the trans. If I do get those turbos I do need 2” inlets which I’d also probably get from VRSF

I wouldn't get the dynamic autoworks turbos. They are made for applications above 600hp.

Look into It Rob Beck stage 1 or 2 and or Vargas, which is sold at ECS tuning.

Rob Becks turbos already come with an upgraded wastegate, but you can pay an additional $250.00 for the best wastegate in the business regarding N54 turbos. This is almost a must if you live in the rust belt of the county or a state that uses salt on the roads in the winter.

Again, if you pay by check, you get a $300.00 discount (no one does that, except him). He's been making turbos for the N54 since it's inception about 12 years ago. Hardly anyone can make that claim.

If you haven't yet been to it, you can find/search for a wealth of information and answers to your questions in the N54 Turbo Engine / Drivetrain / Exhaust Modifications - 335i sub forum.
