I can't seem to find the spring release clip. Can someone point me in the right direction? What color is it? Thanks

You need a flathead screwdriver. There are two slits behind the steering wheel, one on each side. BTW, disconnect your negative battery cable first...

Yeah, the clips are sometimes hard to hit since you can't see them and the only access you have is the slot through the wheel fabric. Check the 'DIY" pictures and check the angle you need to use to engage the clips with a flathead screw driver. Picture number 10 in the link shows the clip wires and you can see where your screw driver will come in from each side.

i still can't get to the clips all i see is a metal back plate (pic.14), maybe mine was designed differently

mine's a sport wheel, don't have a hole there.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news - but yes you do. Every wheel has the same (2) holes in the back regardless of what type wheel it is.

The holes are not evident because they are hidden by the outer skin of the wheel. The skin is slit directly over the holes so you can stick the screwdriver in. BMW did this so the holes would not show.

So keep searchin for the holes and follow the DIY

Hmm, I too have a sports package. All the E9X steering wheels have the same type of air bag release mechanism. You sure you had looked for the two slits on either side steering wheel column?

According to pic 14, you're looking at the wrong area. It not on the back of the steering wheel, the slits are on the sides of the steering column (use your finger tips). Pic 15 gives you an false impression where the slits are. That's why I gave my link to find and orient the screw driver to the internal release spring post.
