That is actually a really good idea Torg mate

How do you find your stage 3+?

My stage 2+ is much heavier then stock
In fact it took ages to get use to, because I have weak girly noodle legs lol

raised idle 750 but didn't seem to make a difference

The new HD works well though, reduce some of the idle chatter but its still there. Biggest impact was on the improvement to the smoothness of the engine. Was surprised I did not have high hopes

Since installing the 7670 we have always had a major boost leak, because we could not get enough leverage to keep it fully closed on boost, getting only 12 -14 psi at best

Vince fixed that up this weekend, by extending the waste gate lever and fabricating up a new shaft

The guy is a bloody genius, creating a curving rod to get around the turbo housing and getting 50% more leverage, which is now keeping the waste gate fully closed

On the quick test drive this afternoon, the boost was fully restored, hitting a solid 20 psi at 4000 rpm

Nice work mate

Heres my thoughts:

Wastegate actuator:

Cut the old wastegate arm off and cut a new piece of stainless plate to lengthen the arm. Pivot to pivot distance of the original wastegate was 20mm, so I made the new one 30mm pivot to pivot. In theory, this gives us 50% more clamp force over the old setup.

Welded the new arm on, then bent a M6 threaded rod to make up for the misalignment of the actuator->wastegate arm. This is very important because if the actuator rod is too far off the axis of the actuator it starts to bind up and reduces the amount of pulling force.

Harmonic Balancer:

Because the car is originally an automatic, the harmonic balancer is not optimized for the manual transmission we have fitted. N54 Manual vs auto harmonic balancers are different part numbers. We decided to give the VAC damper a try.

This was a fairly straightforward install, remove fan and serpentine belt. The harmonic balancer has probably reduced the low rpm+high load chatter by 90%, can barely hear it. Idle chatter is still there, probably only reduced by 40%. Higher idle we tried 750 but didn't help, will probably need to go up to 900 rpm. Big relief the product has improved the driving experience massively, because we were not having high hopes for improving the gearbox noise.

The car is now pulling around 20psi of boost in the midrange tapering to 14-16psi, at around 75%-80% wgdc. This is a massive improvment over before where were at 97% WGDC and making a lot less boost with the binding actuator. But looks like we actually have a boost leak somewhere so its quite impressive we are reaching those levels of boost with a leak. Should get plenty of boost with lower wgdc when its all fixed up and pressure tested.

Boost slow to recover after shifts:
https://datazap.me/u/vtl/phil-efr-13...=1&data=3-6-22

Despite this the car drives a lot better than before, pulls quite strongly all the way to redline and the exhaust is actually a lot quiet now (plus no gear rattle when driving it)

After fixing the waste gate on the turbo the logs showed the boost was slow to build up after a gear change, with a boost leak being the most likely culprit.

Vince made up a device to attach to the inlet of the turbo and pressurise the system using compressed air

With the system cranked up to 30 psi, Vince found a boost leak on the connection to the charge pipe

With the ring clamp tightened up, the system was holding pressure

A quick test drive in the rain, confirmed the leak was fixed and Gary was back to being bad ass hahah

Mod 114 - Focal Utopia Be No 7 audio upgrade

Purchased these speakers about a year ago and finally got around to getting them installed, thanks to the boys at Profound Sound here in Melbourne

Guys did a great job, mounting them with custom sails for the tweeters, rings for the 3" mids and door pods for the 6.5" subs

System sounds great, although I'd like a little more top end volume, but seeing these are SQ speakers you can't have everything

Regular readers will know this is the third (and last) audio upgrade, starting with a set of focal IF-BMW (plug n plays) then the Critical Mass set up and now the Focal U Bes

For those interested in the final set up, pics and details below

Head unit
Stock NBT

Speakers (active)
Focal TBe 60mm beryllium inverted dome tweeters
Focal 3 W2Be 80 mm (3") mid-range
Focal 6 W3Be 165 mm (6.5") woofers
Focal 33KX 330 mm (13") sub-woofer

Digital Signal Processor/amp
Helix V Eight amp with integrated DSP

Sub woofer amp
Helix M One Subwoofer amp

aptx HD lossless bluetooth module (for streaming)
Audiotech Fischer HEC/MEC BT module
Audiotech Fischer Director control module

No not yet mate. I've only just gotten the 2007 E91 323i Wagon in Black Sapphire and my wife and I have just bought a house, so spending money on the car is pretty sparse at the moment.

The only mods I've done so far is putting on a set of Black Whispbar S45WB Roof Rails to go with the black paintwork and the center console phone cradle tray replacement.

I have got plans, but it will all be depending on cash flow and getting the rights parts for the right prices at the right time. I'm an a aircraft mechanic by trade so I'm handy and I'll be looking to do most things myself. I was pretty active on E46Fanatics Aus Forum for quite a while where I modded up my old E46 318i sedan.

Once I start a more substantial mod, I probably create a build thread then.

Cheers.

Yeah I know, for the last couple of years I hardly even went on there as no-one was actively being involved anymore and the good older crowd seem to have all moved on.

I still keep an eye out and speak to a few of the Sydney guys like Raj with his TWD detailing business, Tim Kowaliw, Mitchell Knox and Johnny KCR, but god its been ages since I last chatted to Sherwin. Glad to see a few of them are still around.

Great day at Eastern BM with the first dyno day we have done for a while
Great to see Tim, Pete and Nic again, as well as meeting lots of new people

While at the end of the day Doms M6 took out the day with a 425 KW pull, SPCGRY did a respectable 324 KW up on the 308 KW last time it was on the dyno

Big thanks to Jin for hosting and Vince for organising
