Clutch barely engages at the very bottom

Was driving my car (08 e92) the other day and I noticed my car was shifting a little rough. By the time I got home, my clutch had no resistance until the last inch (almost to the floor) where I could barely get it into gear. It's pretty undrivable now. I checked the brake/clutch reservoir and the line is a bit under the max fill line. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

I'd inspect for leaks, bleed the clutch, and then if that didn't fix it look at the slave and master cylinder for problems.

Hopefully a bleed fixes it, but this sort of thing doesnt just happen all the sudden normally.

Keep in mind that even though there's only one brake fluid reservoir, the reservoir is split internally such that it may appear full but the section of the reservoir that provides the clutch fluid may be dry.

The clutch section of the reservoir is towards the front of the car if I remember right. Its tricky to see even if you know its there.

Is the clutch section inside the brake fluid part? All I see leading from the brake reservoir is a hose leading thru the firewall.

yeah, your brake fluid reservoir is divided internally into two parts. one for the brakes one for the clutch. Hard to see it.

Ok I see it, I had my roommate push the clutch in, the level rises and falls about an inch, the fluid in the clutch area is a bit lower but still above the low fill line.

To bleed I assume I have to bleed it at the slave cylinder? Which would be under the plastic shielding under the car?

Yeah its gonna be a little plastic fitting with a bleed screw on it on the left (american drivers side) of the transmission.

you have your helper pump and hold the clutch, open the bleed screw, close the bleed screw, and then have your helper release the clutch. Fill the brake fluid reservior to make up for lost fluid, and repeat.

IMPORTANT!!!!!! ---> The clutch fluid section of the brake fluid reservior that I talked about in my earlier posts is VERY small, so you pretty much need to make sure its topped off after every bleed so you dont suck massive amounts of air into the lines. If you do, no biggie, just keep bleeding till its all gone.

Slave or master cylinder; more likely slave cylinder. Check for leaks and rebleed. Good luck!
