Question RE: CCC to CIC

Did some digging into this for some DIYs, had a few clarifications needed.

  1. Currently, do I still need an emulator of some sort + repin to pull off the conversion?
  2. Excluding my screen (plan to replace my CCC screen with one of the android units) and obviously, the head unit, is there any other HW that I might need to switch?
    • I'd still need to do combox I assume?
    • Any addtl harnessing aside from emulator?
    • Do i need to tweak anything related to the SAT/GPS or is that taken care of with the emulator?
    • Wanted to confirm that i can still retain my CCC controller (I actually prefer the simpler look)

Actually technically I guess not really, depending on what you would define as the CCC/CIC.

My main goal here was to replace my CCC head unit as the DVD drive is dying and I wanted to use this oppt to upgrade to the newer HDD head units from the CIC.

Then I figured I could go 1 step further and just replace the display at the same time, skipping the OE CIC display and just using one of the newer android ones. However, since they ask whether your car is CIC or CCC when purchasing the display, I assumed that the display isnt what dictates CCC or CIC

So I needed clarification on the points in my OP because I need to tackle the guts of the CIC conversion with a few exclusions.

  1. No emulator required. provided you can do all coding and nav activation. make sure the CIC head unit that has latest C1A firmware.

So you just need a lvds cable if you're buying an android kit for cic, but then if you do that it may not work with a ccc controller.

You'd be best to buy a ccc android unit if it comes with a new screen. As you already have the correct knob and the ccc screen wiring.

CCC/CIC idrive controller is same plug. Thats what the 4pin plug is in the kit linked. but its not needed. Check your ccc controller plug first to confirm.

Just because the plug is the same doesn't mean they're cross compatible. The CIC controller has 7 buttons not 1 as per ccc.
An android h/u designed for one may not work with the other.

Thank you! super helpful info. Regarding the ebay link you sent, just wanted to confirm, are these used in place of the repin procedure? Or is there still repinning involved

Damn, I was fairly certain CCC control worked on CIC (fully OEM) going into this thread. But good point about the Android compatibility. Would either of you happen to knowif the controller connects directly to the display? or does it go through the head unit then the display in series?

So, I'm new to the forum and new to BMW's. I've owned a Mini for many years and played with a lot of stuff on it.

I just purchased an '06 E91 wagon with a lot of issues which I'm happy to work through. One of which is a dead CCC. I believe the head unit has died so my thought is instead of finding/buying another CCC head unit, I would like to do the upgrade to CIC.

I am not having much luck searching the forum and weeding through the information...

Can someone give me some good links to the the upgrade... i.e.: What has to change (it appears the head unit and CID with some cabling) and more important what is compatible CIC units if I want to try the Junk yard approach???

Thanks for any help!

I did the junkyard approach still on eBay of course. Just bought separate parts from 4 different cars lol. All was under 200 minus combox retrofit. If you wanna kit too, this link below might be worth trying.

Thank you for the response. I'm still confused about what parts will actually swap. Like... Can I swap parts from a 5 series or does it have to be a 3 series?

Thanks!

You can get a screen and controller from 5 series. Headunit will need to be from a 3 series

So, this thought just came to mind since I've been watching the local Junk Yards. Is the 5 series only a fit issue with the head unit or is there a programing issue?

There is a 2010 535i that just came in to the local picknpull that has everything. If it's just a fit issue I might go ahead and grab it for the time being until something else shows up...

EDIT... BTW, I ask this because mine right now is DEAD (see post above) so I have no radio, no display, no nothing. I would like to at least have the radio for now until I can get a unit that is correct for the car.

Thanks!
