Cic upgrade

Iím looking to go from non I-Drive to cic and have had a good read over the procedure. What I canít understand is which cic version/ build date I need. Iíve looked on eBay etc and the latest I can find is one made in 2011. I also want to fit a Combox.

Iíve currently got a;

E92 uk 2010 320d msport
BMW professional cd Headunit
Basic sound system

Once itís installed Iíll be looking to upgrade the firmware and software, so I want to make sure I donít run into any problems, Iíll be getting a bn2000 Combox.

Iím wanting sat nav, Bluetooth streaming and the online services, might put a rear view camera in (has park distance control at the mo) and maybe a tv module. Dab enabled cic Headunit seem as rare as hens teeth and £200 dearer than non DAB Headunits

Anyone able to keep me right on the hardware to look out for?

Also anyone confirm if I have a mulf or tcu. Iíve got Bluetooth calling, no SOS and no usb socket anywhere.

There really is not any way to know if you have the latest CIC software (C1A) until you read it with a coding rig. I have bought 3 used CIC from 2012s. 2 of the 3 were on the latest software. A safer bet may be to get one from a diesel. Those got flashed at the dealer more often.

As for the MULF/TCU post a pic of what is under the floor of your trunk. You may have a mulf with BT only and no USB wiring. Or BT may be built into your head unit.

Thanks.

I’m toying with the idea of just getting the cic, controller and sticking in an android unit. I know I could get a gps antenna and connect it directly to the cic, the other option is a Combox but not sure how / where I’d wire in an antenna. I’m assuming My shark fin only has a radio antenna so not sure of how I’d go about a factory gps setup.

Your picture is a mulf. The version without USB. I believe the android will require a CIC but do some research.

Thanks, yeah just weighing up costs if I wanted everything full Oem it seems cheaper to just get the cic, controller, dash and wires And a droiduk screen.

If the cic isnít coded to the car Iím assuming it will still pull car data over and that only nav and audio doesnít work. So Iíll need to code it to get the aux out on the cic working otherwise I wonít get audio on the droiduk screen.

Cheers for your help

Aux in is all that is needed for the aftermarket systems. Nav needs coding and or emulator/patch activation but you will be using the aftermarket system. CIC coding may be needed if your car does not match the donor with base audio vs logic 7. So you probably will need some form of coding.

Iíve gone the oem route. Iíve bought a cic with the following details;

HW 40
Build date 18/13
Ece region

Iím hoping with it being a newer model, coding will be easier. Iíll be buying a bn2000 Combox soon as well and doing a pin swap.

Have you any experience with that era cic?

As the car doesnít have gps, is it simply a case of buying a gps antenna with a fakra connector and plugging it into the Combox and maybe some coding?

The CIC also happens to have DAB, so is it the same as above by connecting a dab antenna but directly to the cic?

CICs are mostly the same. It is the C1A firmware that many are upgraded to that makes the CIC patcher work to activate the nav and other features. Combox does not need the GPS if you are just using it for bluetooth and USB. If there is a blue antenna wire in the trunk, it can be extended to the CIC in the front for nav. If no blue connector, the shark fin may have the un-used port. Or aftermarket antenna in the dash can also work.

I don't know about European DAB. US uses the same antenna for alll radio.

Thanks mate, just got a combox, dab diversity antenna, glovebox usb, arm rest aux\usb, some wires and connectors to make the screen and Combox harnesses and I’m good to go.

I couldn’t see the any connections in the boot\ trunk. I’ve heard the shark fin may have the gps antenna already but I’m not sure how I’d access it, do you know if the roof lining comes down as a panel or is it like loose cloth?, I’ve bought a gps antenna which I was going to mount under the dash towards the window.

If you already bought a GPS antenna, just use that. If your shark fin had the connector, you would still need an extension.

Just waiting on various bits to come through including the dash.

Iíve fitted the diversity antenna and the combox and swapped the pins over. My Bluetooth phone prep no longer works which I expected as in my understanding the car doesnít know thereís a combox. Iíve noticed on the pin swap diagram that it says pwr to pin 1 and 2 of the combox connector. Iíve put it in pin 1 as I only had 1 red/yellow wire.

Once Iíve got the rest of the parts Iíll have a look and see what firmwares on the devices before I tackle coding.

The worst job Iím looking at it getting the fakra cable for the dab radio signal from the cic through to the diversity antenna.

Its either pin 1 or 2. Does not need to be both.
