Trunk won't open???

For some reason, my trunk won't open! The button on my key fob won't work nor will the trunk release button inside. I can't even open it from the button on the trunk itself when all doors are unlocked. WTF is this?

Anyone experience this problem before? I don't have time to take it to the dealer till Saturday and can't even read the manual to look up this malfunction because it's too big to fit in the glove box

That definitely doesnt sound right. Occasionally the button on my remote might act a little quirky and not work but my Comfort Access always works for me.

I had the same problem -- when I was trying to catch a plane and all my luggage was in the trunk.

It was indeed the valet switch in the glove box. I don't know if it moved a little bit after I hit a bump or what, but moving it to lock and then unlock position allowed the remote to work again. I still made my flight.

WTF.....didn't even know there was such a thing as a valet on off switch. Been having this problem the last few days where my trunk would not open unless I use the key inserted into the key hole at the trunk. The only thing I can think of is I actually locked the glove box with the key (put my wallet in there while running) about a week ago and by putting the key in the glove box hole it must set off the switch. I was going to drive to the dealer tomorrow but this thread saved me.

Thanks for this discussion. Mystery solved. Valet switch found. Trunk locks working normally. Why is there no mention of that switch in owner's manual or Bentley?

The things you learn in this place.

Had absolutely NO clue that there was a "valet" switch for the trunk in the glove box until I read it here and looked in the glove box for myself. So, there's actually a use for the key in the key fob. Throw the truck lock switch in the glove box and lock the glove box with the key.

Who knew? Yeah, I know just. . .

BTW, I "found" the mini-flashlight in the glove box, when I read another thread which said there "should" be one there too!

And OBTW, there IS something that's NOT in the manual. It's a description of the purpose of the "switch" inside the center console, if you have one (some do and some don't) which is apparently opens the "vents" in the drink holder, which will allow the HVAC in the car to heat or cool a cup/can sitting there.

Here's where I found the explanation for that:

Love this forum. I've owned my 330i for over 5 yrs and I never even knew this switch existed, nor ever saw it. My trunk was locked for the past 2 days and couldn't figure out why. My 6yr old son must have inadvertently moved it the other day while in the car.

Thanks for the info e90 post.

Well, make me #8 or whatever. I just got my car two days ago (F30 328d) and I was showing the car off to a buddy and voila! couldn't open the trunk with the fob or with the button down to the left of the dash. I'm assuming it's the magical valet switch in the glove compartment and will check that out tomorrow. It is in the F30 manual on page 41. I just missed it.

Edit: This information is NOT in the online manual for the F30, at least not on p.41.

My switch is unlocked (in glove compartment) and the trunk won't open with the remote. Nor does the button next to the door will work. I can only unlock/lock doors. Anyone know why? thanks

Sounds like the classic valet switch "problem."

You sure the valet switch is "unlocked"? If you haven't done so already, just throw the switch the other way to check. If it's still locked, there is probably an electrical problem. I'd check the fuse. If re-seating it doesn't do anything, replace it even if it looks ok.

Anything beyond that is pretty much beyond my ability to fix and, unless someone else here can help, you'll probably have to take it to a shop to get it to work.

Good luck!

Thanks for your input! The valet is Unlocked for sure. I checked.

What's funny is the day after this post, the trunk would work fine again. Then a few hours after, it stopped working and has since been the same.

I'll check the fuse. Would you happen to know which one it is? If I recall the last time I checked the fuse, the diagram was not accurate. Thank you so much for all your help and advice!

Well, if it works sometimes and other times not, it probably some electrical gremlin of some sort and is probably NOT the fuse. Maybe a loose wire?

I know this doesn't help but I wish you luck figuring it out?

This thread fixed it for me too! I had no idea (at least under panic) that we even had a valet switch. I didn't even remember about there being a key hole back there! Called a local BMW dealer and he reminded me about the key, but didn't mention the valet switch.

Glad I checked here before trying to troubleshoot!

Thanks folks!

Thumbs up

OMG! I drive a bmmer for over 9 years and never knew the valet switch existed, nor ever saw it! My trunk was locked for the past 2 weeks and took to a shop to check. I was told I need to replace JBE which sends signal to the trunk lock. Quoted for over 1000 to fix including reprogram.

Glad I back off and went online to search. Love this forum! Thumbs up for all the contributors

What a great place. I decided to register an account because of this
