When you say atm exhaust I'm assuming you got the downpipe too. That should of came with a gasket, shouldn't be that. Is egr deleted? Blocked off? If so maybe you split the ccv hose on installation (I know I did). Maybe the egr is leaking somewhere. You check for oil around the turbos area? Could be something leaking around there. You check v band clamp from turbo to downpipe? Could be loose or not on completely.

You're also deleted so it's gonna smell. You're pulling outside air (which has stinky diesel exhaust all around it) when you have the heat on still. For me fumes at a stop wouldn't worry me much. It would worry me if I was driving and could smell fumes. I would start by getting in there and checking those things first, there's lots of things in the engine bay that could be leaking exhaust fumes.

Atm dp yes, everything blocked off yes. Atm exhaust did leak around slip joints. Just smells bad though and I know it's going to smell.

I hate slip joints. my resonator on my 7.3 powerstroke used those and all it did was leak no matter how tight I got it. I just got the damn thing welded on and no exhaust leak anywhere. I'd try that. My exhaust is completely welded from the downpipe flange back and I've never had a problem with smells.

i have installed 3 exhaust systems on these 335 and the X5 never had one leak.

if your exhaust smells really bad try a different fueling station. i notice when i fill up at a Kroger fuel station my exhaust smell is really strong, but if i full up at Chevron its not as bad... i don't thinks its placebo because i seem to notice it every time and I'm not "looking" for the smell. it just what i tend to notice

Then I'm betting your vband clamp is loose or egr blockoff plate is leaking. Shouldn't smell any worse than a city bus vs. that farm tractor stech

Thanks to this thread I quickly found the very obvious leak #1 on my 2011 335d as well. I have 105k miles and just finished my own CBU cleaning. All stock. Wondering how the hell to get to the metal end of that turbo oil feed hose to replace it? Do other things have to come off? I have small hands

Thanks in advance. I have been pressing the appreciate button appropriately. So thank you. Seriously. I'd buy you guys a drink if you were in Utah.

Smell is strong but vband is good to go as well as block off.

@montr i recently removed that large turbo heat shield on top and used realoem pics to figure where and how many 10mm bolts are holding place then some slight deforming of the shield to slip it out... careful not to nick or cut any vacuum lines etc. when replacing the vacuum lines, mine were so brittle they snapped... replacing with silicone 1/8" lines... not sure these are correct as realoem lists them as 3.5mm and 3.8 mm...

needless to say, realoem is a real asset to us !

regarding smoke in the cabin, i had a turbo oil line (#1) that failed and spewed oil all over my engine / turbo area so when it heats up, the oil burns. will need a good cleaning otherwise the smoke in cabin will continue... i may also have the failed or failing exhaust pressure rubber line... when i replaced the exhaust pressure line, i used just enough torque to deform the aluminum washer. same as the 5 banjo bolts with new copper crush washers...

Thanks for the info. I just got the car back from the dealer. I had a code 4D16 for the SCR system. They replaced the front and rear exhaust NOx sensors per SIB 011017. Test plan found the old style NOx sensors, which are outdated and prone to poisoning from magnesium in the exhaust gas.

I need to drive the car more to see if the fumes are still there. If so, I will need to inspect the turbo area to find the problem. Maybe it is the exhaust pressure line.

so tricky... just looking at picture #9 in this thread... looks fine from top, touch it and it's cracked. i checked mine yesterday and found it to be intact. my issue is likely turbo connection pipe. i broke one of the ends while trying to jam it (and the hard black rubber o rings) back into the hole where the small and large turbo connect. maybe source for exhaust leak..

i had major smell from improper egr cooler block off install (my fault) and broken crank case vent line. then i had serious smoke coming out the egr cooler water line on top of the egr cooler ( i had already decommissioned the egr cooler and coolant lines)

i came upon this thread after my wife told me she was smelling exhaust in the cab of her 335d. the exhaust temp sensor was in good condition at 120k miles. the charge pipe was pretty greasy and has a considerable amount of oil/soot on the exterior. i'm thinking this is the issue for me.

V-band isn't seated properly or check the Exhaust manifold pressure sensor piping. Mine was leaking exhaust and it's very close to the fresh air intakes.

I have kind of a stupid question, but do these Intercoolers get clogged up with oil blowby? Charge pipe is filthy, I can only imagine how jacked up the intercooler is...

I’ve only had a little oil run out of sick IC. I poured some cleaner in it and poured out. Flushed with water. I let it dry about 6 hours and reinstalled. My ASV ( most call it throttle body) gets a small but clean oil film. Charge pipe gets a little oil film too but not bad. No EGR here.
Just look and pour out and clean if need be.

Replaced the intercooler charge pipe with the atm unit. Nice piece. Minimal blowby in the intercooler so I soaked it up with a paper towel.
Then I found the stupid exhaust pressure sensor tube. Bingo.

Went ahead and wrapped the hot side of the intake box with some extra heat wrap I had.

Mine came apart while on the track. I noticed some extra noise under the hood, and I could feel the exhaust heat. I thought maybe the clamp it was in rubbed it.

I had disconnected the egr valve for about two years, is the thinking the extra carbon may have plugged the DPF and created too much pressure? Or is this just natural wear and tear? Fixed mine with just some heavy duty fuel line. Keeping an eye on it.
