2009 X5 35D Dies when running, no CEL
Hi, a couple weeks ago I was driving my 2009 BMW X5d after just changing the oil and swapping the front suspension hats. I hit a small bump and lost all power, I steered the car to the curb. I ran home and got my scanner and scanned the car. The car had no CEL, but had three stored codes, MAF, Crabk sensor, and I cant remember the third.
Got the car home and decided to charge the battery, the car started right up. I pulled the battery and discovered it was exactly 6 years old. Went to Autozone and bought a new AGM battery, same size (even made in Germany). Car started right up and has been trouble free for about 3-4 weeks. Today my wife was driving the power when it cut out, she rolled to the side and tried to restart it. Car cranked strong, but no start. Get the car home, check codes again. No CEL, just the same three stored codes. For kicks I tried to start the car, started right up. Drove around the block and returned it to my driveway, about to shut it off and the car sputters and dies. Try to crank it again, no start. Walk away for a minute, attempt to start and she fires right up. This time I drive it directly into my garage to let it sit. After doing some research I realize that the battery needs to be coded to the car, I had no idea. Could this be the reason for my mystery problem? I plan on towing the car tomorrow or Friday to my friends shop to code the battery and read any codes with his Autologic. I only have a simple scanner. Any input is appreciated. Thanks, Marco |

If you had a lead acid battery in there first. You must program it. If it was an agm to agm the a simple registration is only needed. No, lack of reg of the battery will not cause your issue.

Coding or not coding the battery will not cause the issue. It will just shorten the life of the battery. Make sure proper type and capacity are coded. For your issue, it seems to have been covered before. Either a battery cable behind the glove box. I think it’s called B+ cable. Or more likely, your crank or camshaft position sensors.
