Problems after cat replacement

Some of you may be familiar with my 08 328i because of my “Should Dump or Repair?” thread.

So as a follow-up, cats were replaced and drove the car home from the dealership free and clear of problems. Next day, I turn the car over, and within two miles of driving I get a CEL. The CEL is P0492 — another emissions-related CEL. What’s even more interesting is this is for bank 2, which is the same side I had my replacement cat installed. Anyway, I figure no biggy, I’ll get this replaced under SULEV as well.

However, on my way to the gym today, the car was super sluggish, and after a hard acceleration out of a light, the car went into limp mode and start shaking as well as cycling up and down on the revs. No code for misfire was found...what’s going on? Any similar experiences?

Maybe this just the oxygen sensor going bad? You might not have had a bad cat after all but a bad O2 sensor,

Turns out it was a misfire. P0301. I've had this cylinder misfire before, and it was due to a bad coilpack. Going to have to check this newer coil (has about ~1-1.5k miles on it?). If this coil split like the other then I'm unsure what's causing that specific cylinder to eat the ignition coil...again?

From what I understand, the technicians replaced the O2 sensors, unless I'm interpreting the notes incorrectly?

No they did not replace the O2 sensors. They just reinstalled your old ones.

It clearly states "...transfer over before and after O2 sensors onto new catalytic..."

I wonder if your cats really needed changing, and if it was just a bad O2 sensor. Someone mentioned this in your previous thread , but it was after you said that you had it repaired.

Hmm, very true. Maybe my bogging at idle could be related to this. I forgot to mention this, but post cat-replacement, my engine bay and cabin wreak of gasoline. My brother mentioned it to me today on the way to the gym.

I'll heed this advice and go on and look into the replacement for the O2 sensor and see if it can sort some of my issues out.

Thanks, Wolf!
