This is just growing pains, once hardware like this is available the parts like aftermarket BOV's etc tend to follow suit rather quickly. Our estimate is based off this exact turbo set-up putting down 550+ WHP on different motors, the fuels used vary. This turbo will support a little less then that as it is running through the stock housings so 500 is a perfectly doable number, how we get there, tuning, fuel, etc remains to be seen. Once we get it on a car and testing things will become more clear quickly.
I am VERY happy to see a bigger turbo option out there. I will be in the market within the next year probably. I too am confused, you are selling a turbo with upgrade wheels and integrated diverter, but the diverter probably won't work with the new turbo wheels? Are you not sending out a product that you know won't work then? If you are sending out an upgraded turbo then shouldn't the whole piece you send out work? Hopefully I am misunderstanding something. Vargas has a good rep, so that is probably the case.

Tony, I'd like to keep my stock dp on. I know it's required to run high boost to go catless but I'm not looking for a racecar. I am one of those guys that enjoy getting pushed back into the seat every now and then but not all the time... It's my dd so I want it civilized but deadly when I tussle with a big boy in the strip or track once a year.

I'll upgrade a chargepipe and intercooler but that's it. I'm really thinking that holding 18psi to redline will suffice my needs as of now. What do you think?

Update: Spoke with forge. They are up to the task of making us a custom diverter valve to get rid of the factory electronic one. We are going to have them make us a sample and test it on the test car. Assuming it works out as we hope, each turbo will be available with the upgraded diverter as an option so you don't have to mess with the stock valve, or switching over to a recirc BOV etc. I am shipping them the stock valve tomorrow so I should have news soon. Oh, yeah the reverse turbine wheels have shipped. I should see them by Friday. I will post pics of them next to the stock unit. Also we have reached our 5 intro price orders and the intro price is now concluded.

Do we dare ask what the regular price is?

Doing such small batches drives the cost of the custom parts way up. Retail price is set at $3999 right now. But if we get enough people to produce a bigger batch. The price will come down.

Vargas,

Do you have a software tuner on board yet? I'm assuming you are going to need someone to program the test car at least. Will it be up to the end user to source a tune or you plan to bundle an ecu tune with the turbo as an option? I can understand if you don't want to reveal too much of your business plan at this point, just curious.

I can see this going one of two ways. 1) You just release the turbos and let the aftermarket figure out how to tune it. Most big tuners would probably develop an N55 "big turbo" off the shelf tune. 2) You partner with a tuner and give them first crack at developing the tune and sell it bundled with the hardware.

I for one would be more inclined to drop $8,000+ on a complete engine package (turbo, diverter valve, software, intercooler, downpipe, exhaust, etc.) than spending $4,000 on a turbo alone.

My first post discusses. Tuning, and who should be able to tune. We will not be offering a package. We will be developing a tune with PTF and BMS most likely. We will handle the diverter as that is part of the turbo, as far as intercoolers, DP's exhaust etc. We build turbos, those parts are mostly available now and the ones that aren't will be soon.

How about working with COBB on a tune?

Running the stock, catted DP will likely cause extra stress on the turbo.

If they didn't change the turbo, which I am 99% sure they didn't, it should fit. As it is remaining mostly stock appearing.

Update: Forge has the valve and is confident then can make something for us. They sent it off to the UK to get it done. All the wheels are here, I took some direct comparison photos with the stock stuff as I haven't posted that yet. I am waiting for the final machining and we can install in out test car. The machining process is quite extensive. These stupid turbofolds sure complicate an upgrade process..

Part numbers are a bit different between the 5er and 3er.

I wouldnt worry about that until we see something. I think the N54's have over 30 different part numbers for the same turbos, and that front and rear. They change the part number anytime they improve or change something on them.

I notice that the original turbine is fully backed with a back plate but the back of the upgraded turbine is open. What is the effect of this difference?

Basically Garrett chooses to use open back, while Borg Warner uses full back their newer stuff. Full backs can be more efficient but getting a custom reverse rotation full back BW wheel made is next to impossible at this point in time, and it wouldnt work in the Garrett CHRA anyways.

Excuse my ignorance but can you show what you mean by a full back and open back wheel? Also what are the differences in turbo characteristics between the two?

To see the difference, just look at the first two pictures Tony has posted above - it doesn't really need any more explanation than that.

Yeah, look at the first pic above. See the smaller wheel on the right? It has a full back plate that sort of enclose the blades. The larger wheel on the left is open on the back, you can sort of see through the blades. Tony's upgraded wheel is obviously the larger open one on the left.
