OP probably saw the yellow goo on the key and took a whiff...

I noticed the goo on my key but didn't sniff it until OP's thread. Yup it smells like musty army surplus store

Maybe, because if you actually use the key in the door lock, it might be the first time in years (or ever) that it's used, the grease is for the lock mechanism?

Just a guess, wth do I know

I've had other keys sit around unused for years/decades without rusting...

so true! I pulled the key out smelled it and then looked at it and smelled it again, I just have to lol. It does smell weird, like old play doe or something I cant really pin point it

I did this today after this thread, it does smell. My car was at the dealer: brake fluid flush, rear brake pads, air filter, cabin air filter, coolant flush; $153.40 U mad bro?

JK, everything was maintenance plan besides coolant.

yeah but the fob key is encased in plastic and lets say your fob gets wet and then well you know what happens...
