$350 bucks to replace a vacuum line? Did I get ripped off?

I have the platinum extended warranty from BMW and apparently vacuum hoses are excluded from it. So the dealer charged me $356 to replace it when the part was only 37 bucks... Since I took it in for 'extended' warranty, they would of charged me a $180 diagnostic fee if I didn't get it done there. Does 315 for labor sound about right or not?

i got all lines and vacuum canisters changed for 100 bucks. i had the material. I guess the price there includes all the testing which takes time.

is says right there PER CUSTOMER APPROVAL. and yes you did get ripped off. it seems like the boost line from your dv's was cut or damaged. You could have fixed that yourself for under $5.


EDIT: you didnt get ripped off you just paid for BMW's time. which i believe is $120 an hour.

Yeah when you bring it in for extended warranty and it turns out it isn't covered, you get charged a 180 diagnostic fee if you don't get the work done. I had a engine malfunction light so I assumed it was the fuel pump, so I brought it in. I'm not that good with engines, so I had no idea it could be fixed for under 5 bucks. Damn. I knew it seemed off.

He had a 30FF code, Which mean boost leak. They searched for it and found out that one of the boost lines was damaged or cut so it was leaking boost.

Not your fault simple mistake, the service department is just as big of a scam as the sales. So they try to trap you.

SA: So we took a look at it and it seems that one of your high pressure special vacuum lines are damaged

BMW owner: how bad is it

SA: its really bad only we can fix it ......

BMW owner: Well when you say it that way, go ahead.



Lol, If you were to scan the car and get the code you would have had 20 people here tell you their is a boost leak and its probably your dv's.

Rule of thumb I use: every 4 years I rip out all vacuum lines and replace them with brand new! Make sure that the new lines can handle the pressure and the vacuum without ballooning or collapsing!

haha exactly! Yeah I did research on the forums about the "Engine malfunction light. reduced power" error message. Everyone that had it, said it was the fuel pump going out. So I didn't even think to get my car scanned... Oh well, lesson learned.

They killed you on the labor and diagnostic fee, sounds right for BMW.

I remember when diagnostic fees were only $90, and it was expensive then too.

the dealer quoted me the same price in new york city.

he said 80 dollars for the parts and the total would be like 770 or something. so i am assuming there are two lines that need to be replaced 770/2= 335

i refused it and i am now looking for a diy fix on the threads

Not all ASM's are out to get your $. Service isnt a scam, the people that work in certain service area's are scumbags and so are some stealerships.

Keep in mind, if you go to the doctor with a sore throat, you are paying for his diagnostic time--you know you have a sore throat, but that is causing it. Granted if you have health insurance you just have to pay your copay (deductable) but he did approach that wrong.

His job is to work with these extended warranty companies and he should know that something like that might not get covered. He should have made you aware of the diagnostic fee from the start and said that if ext warranty will not cover it, then you will be responsible for the diagnostic time.

Did he tell you there was a one hour or two hour diagnostic fee involved? That needs to be approved up front and if not, then you are not responable for it.

-Friendly ASM that doesnt need your $, but will kindly take it with permission

It's the equivalent of going to the ER to get an aspirin for $1k. Vacuum lines and all rubber hoses can all be replaced for about $40 if you diy it.

Whats a good source for some quality lines? Do you go silicone or rubber?

After my dealer walnut blasted my intake valves I was getting a p30ff code. They couldn't find out where the boost leak was. So I cleaned my DV's, which was causing the boost leak, and checked my vacuum lines. One had broken right behind the oil filter housing and someone coupled it together with a larger hose...Anyways I mentioned the the ghetto rigged vacuum line to my SA and even though I was over 50k miles he still ordered and replaced the line for me, no charge. Didn't even have to pay the $50 deductible. So not all SA's are bad

Always go with rubber lines. Silicone is too prone to heat. Go to any auto part store and they can cut it for you.

Are you sure? I'd think silicone would be more heat resistant.

I got turbo smart silicone vacuum lines from Summit Racing. Note the 10' in one package isn't enough to replace every vacuum line, you'll need a few extra feet.
