BT tool is usful if your are running a tune, but no further mods. Running a tune can trigger a tuner code, which when detected by a dealer will invalidate your warranty (engine, drivetrain etc). This gives solid proof to your dealership that your car has been creating more torque than can be created by the stock ecu. The BT tool can read and clear these codes.

Additional to this, you have access to all ECU modules on your car. You can datalog, read and delete other codes, reset all adaptations, reset service indicators etc etc. This will be useless for many, but valuable to others - horses for courses and all that.

But hey, if it works for you, good luck!
Many people running just a tune above MAP 5 without bolts-ons say it runs fine. At this level using the BT to check for knock codes (Ignition Glow) and timing advance/retard is the only way to know. The butt dyno is somewhat flawed

Your more likely to CEL in higher temps as the boost targets cant be met. Thats not a problem anyone for an AMS FMIC?

The BT Tool is a cheaper version of the BMW GT1/OPS tool.

The cheaper code readers dont have the same features list as the BT does hence the cost. Many of the other tools only show the code and not a description!!
  • Read and clear diagnostic fault codes
  • Display shadow faults and soft faults
  • Display and record real-time actual values
  • Activate components of the car for troubleshooting
  • Reset service reminders
  • Reset condition-based service indicators
  • Send special commands to control units
  • Show ECU information
  • Access the latest BMW DCAN systems for 2007+ models

The full features matrix can be found here...

Glad to hear! Yes let the fun begin. Hook the cable to the laptop and follow this link todo some data logging. It will allow you to see boost, throttle position, IAT.

http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8035

The realtime data logging makes the jb3 awesome tuning product.

I usually run map 4 with v-power or Tesco 99. When I'm in the mood map 6 works a treat - specially with some Torco Race Fuel Concentrate!

Do you not like maps 5 or 7? They are the same as 4 and 6 but with lagfix enabled.

They really get rid of the inherent delay on boost pick up, no more power just better pick up.

No, I don't like them and I don't think my car does either.

If you change gear quick enough it's fine anyway.

I am probably being thick but what BHP increase can I expect at a map that will not trigger codes?

I run map 5 and have no codes at all. It really shifts, from US reports I'd say at least +6070 bhp flyhweel and about 80lbft? (always use 98/99 ron)

It a proper missile with it, the effortless overtaking ability (what counts on the road) is phenomenal - in 2nd and 3rd you can pass 3 cars in a small gap where you'd have managed 1 before, and you're at the top of 3rd in a few seconds from 40 or so. You need to re-adjust your braking distances!!

Map 3 is reckoned to be 100% code free, and that gives about +40/50 ish?? But as said I've got no probs at map 5.

AFAIK the 'Lagfix' function is for in-gear pickup from steady to on-throttle, rather than gear-shift boost control.

It just runs the wastegates more closed during cruise (steady rather than off throttle) this means the standard spool up delay when you apply throttle is much reduced.

The 'bog-fix' function is to keep boost up during full throttle shifts by reducing throttle shut angle during shifts above 4500rpm.

Agreed.

But the downside is reduced economy.
As every small press is building boost.
It may make less agile drivers less smooth on the throttle too.

For the 335d owners we have the JBD which is like the JB+ and is adjustable for gains up to 60hp and 100tq
