Walmart Oil +Filter for N51 328i E93

Trying to get a good deal for a DIY Oil + filter change

Found these in walmart, so going to buy 10 quarts. Will use 7 and keep the rest for next time:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-0...-5-qt/23636902

Not sure which filter to get though, they seem to have too many of them and they dont use the BMW part numbers.

Found this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/OEM-HU816...1-Z4/404941613

but not sure if its the right one. They also have about 50 Mobil 1 filters. Is there a way to check which filter is good? Don't want to use another website for the filter to avoid paying shipping.

Wal-mart is usually the best deal for oil, assuming 5qt jugs. You can get castrol, mobil, and other LL01 options.

However, I wouldn't buy a filter there. Buy a Mann filter from Amazon or someone else.

Get the Castrol 0w40, it's a couple cents cheaper and is LL01 approved. The mobil 1 is NOT LL01 approved.

The filter you linked is not actually sold by walmart, it's a walmart market place seller. Garbage filter. Get a Mann HU816X from eBay for $8.50 with free shipping.

HU816 is the OEM MANN oil filter (at least for the N52 - assuming the N52/54-55 use the same oil filter).

I bought the Euro oil online and got free shipping, so I bought 3 of the 5 quart jugs. No oil filters fro there, bad idea. Mann is what folks have been raving about. I am even scared to use the O'Reilly Auto Parts filter that I found locally, despite it looking close to the Mann product.

I have been let down recently by the MANN filters. Both had issues prematurely, and neither lasted anywhere near what the actual OCI is.

I used a MAHLE filter on my last oil change and we'll see how it goes.

They're OE on the volvo and I've been using them for years on the wife's turbo wagon.

What do you mean by recently, what were the premature issues, and at what mileage? I've been using MANN filters for over 12 years and 34 oil changes (combined on both my N52s), four (4) of which were over 18,000 OCI. I've used both BMW OE filters (has MANN HU816 stamped on the filter body) or MANN HU816 from local parts store/FPC Europarts. I've never had an issue with any MANN filter I've used and found the part quality never to vary whether sourced from BMW (Germany) or in the US (Mexico). For several years now I've run a straight 10,000-mile OCI for both cars and still no issue. Just curious.

TIA

the one before the last one was causing a squeeling noise from the oil filter housing. It was partially collapsed at 5K miles.
The last one was also partially collapsed at 5K miles. So much so that it was a PITA to remove from the filter cap.

Mahle filter was fine to my normal 7K interval.

ARe you missing the plastic cage insert on your oil filter housing?

Common issue if you’re missing that part...

This. The AutoZone carries the Mann filter in stock by me, super handy.

What other oil options are there? I went down to the states at the local Walmart and the only 0W-40 BMW LL01 oil I could find was the Castrol.

At one time, BMW approved all four oils below as LL01. Since then, some of these are no longer approved as LL01. I'm going to steer away from the whole discussion about whether mobile is still good even though no longer LL01 approved.

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0w-30, 5w-40, others
Mobil 1 SAE 0w-40
Penzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5w-30
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5w-30

Honestly, I am thinking of switching to super tech 5w-30 now that it is DexOS gen 2 approved. You can run it in new corvettes should be fine for my 3 series.

I know you don't want to talk about it... but if some are not approved anymore, wouldn't it mean that the certain additive BMW wants in the oil is not there anymore?

No it means that the oil brand stopped paying for the certification.

It's not just a certificstion tho, LL 01 has special specs required by BMW.

Honestly a pointless cert. Mobile 1 is still a great oil and people have the blackstone labs to back it up. Many people run Rotella T6 in BMWs these days. Its a great oil for everything really. All these oil have the API seal of approval so whatever you use you can be 100% sure without a doubt no harm will come to your engine.

Right, but the question is, did Mobil change their formula?

I doubt they did.
