Help with suspension questions

Hi all. This is only my second post here after saying hi.

I currently own a 120d msport 2010 plate.

I had all these ideas to sort out the handling and ride. But due to lack of space and power I've decided to give a E91 330d msport LCI a try.

I know the 1 series and 3 series share a lot of the same components and expected the same mods that I have done extensive research on for the E87 would also apply to the E91. But I need to ask the following to know for sure.

1. I'm assuming M3 LCA and meyle HD upper arms are still the way to go and same parts? And worth it

2. There was a popular rear subframe bush insert from whiteline for the E87. Does this apply to the E91?

3. There was a popular rear subframe brace for the E81 that you could retro fit to the E87. I assume this isn't the same part and the E91 already has appropriate bracing and doesn't need touching?

4. Main question. There are BMW performance bump stops said to improve the pogo stick ride quality of the E87. Are these worth it on the E91? They are shorter than standard.

5. Do I need to uprate roll bars? Heard the E91 rear is especially thin. Is this true? Didn't really want to touch it as it's a PITA to do. Maybe I will just do the front or poly bush the current ones l.

I'm sorry for the long post I just thought ide get all the questions in. I'm undecided on shocks and springs. I want to minimise roll but not compromise the ride. Not interested in tracking it.

Was thinking bilstein b4s with Eibach pro springs. Shorter bumps.

I drive a 2008 335i that I just installed St xta coil overs, Trw 11 piece m3 arms, m3 sub frame bushing and some other little things. It's a whole different car now. The setup works great for me. Subframe bushing help me go straight now. I was getting loose in the rear on hard take offs. I go straight now. I'm sure the m3 arms help with that too. After the coil overs broke in I'm super happy. $3k in upgrades but now instead of going fast in a straight line I'm push every corner to see how hard I can push it. It's a fun car to drive again.

Thanks for that. Sounds like a good setup . I've decided on bilstein b12 kit with subframe inserts and m3 arms.

Now just to decide on which wheels

Yeah all by me and my dad. (He doesn't know it yet lol) got a pit and a double garage and plenty of tools and he has plenty of experience working on cars and busses in the past.

Last thing we did was when I had a mk4 golf. We installed weitek suspension and poly bushes all round.

I know this will be a little bit more difficult but hey ho. So full summary will be.

New track rods and ends
Upper control arms (meyle HD)
Lower m3 control arms
B12 kit with eibach pro (not sport line version. Too low)
Rear whiteline subframe inserts
Full alignment obviously.
Michelin PS4 or pSS can't decide

Possibilities that are unknown at the moment . Not enough research done;

Upgraded e93 m3 front arb or just whiteline polybush the existing

Arb drop link upgrade. (Saw a thread about doing this to improve handling with b12 kit)

Rear arb is meant to be too thin on E91. Don't know what to do about it and if it will cause an issue because I can't be arsed to change it due to rear subframe drop and a ball ache.

Add spacers to existing 193m alloys or buy new wheels with better offsets although heard they still won't stick out enough.


The plan is to buy a 330d loci in excess of 100,000 miles cheap. so it will probably all need doing anyway. Then I get a car that drives mint and it's not cost a lot.

Sounds like fun. It took me 2 days to install all my parts. Unless you have something to remove subframe bushing already I recommend this.

This tool made removing and placing the subframe bushings easy. 30 min job. My brother who help me. Has tried to make his own and he has removed them before on other reads rides and it took him hours. Well worth it IMO.

If your doing all this try to do a lot of other little things at the same time. Like new sway bars if u have the money. I didn't but I put new sway bar bushings. A new guibo is cheap and easy to do. Diff fluid is a good idea. Stainless steal brake lines. Just sum ideas. If your going to drop the subframe think about the little things you could do.

Thanks for that. I think I may need to book a week off work to get all this done. A weekend may not be enough when you take in to account changing all the filters and diff oil. Hear box oil. Engine oil.

To be fair what I've mentioned aren't big jobs but soon add up when you consider all rest of stuff I'm doing.

I just hope it's worth it.

Mine was 100% worth it best $3k I spent in a long time

Assuming you know to get an alignment after any suspension work to avoid premature tire wear?

and I am curious how the install went as well...
