DPF and Cat....same thing??

Stupid question time - is this the same item? Is the cat converter the same as the DPF? I thought there is normally a cat regardless and a DPF is a separate component. On realoem, it is just one box called the DPF....
The reason I ask is because the DPF was deleted on my car i.e. knocked out and the empty case put back before I bought it..so does that automatically mean the cat was knocked out at the same time? If so, is that why I have nasty smelling fumes coming out the exhaust?

If it is the case that the cat is the same as the DPF, I'm not too comfortable having no cat at all purely because of the smell/fumes. What are my options? Reinstall a DPF/cat? Is there a aftermarket solution where there is a cat in place but not a DPF?

Highly likely the CAT will still be in there. Its in the same shell as the DPF.

And as for the smell, my car had DPF delete (CAT still there) and it did smell. I now have the DPF back in and it still smells, maybe slightly less but not by much.

Very interesting, thanks. So that would possibly mean that the smell is the result of another issue then...?

Oh man...that's disappointing lol. What about the whitish/blueish smoke? That can't be normal!

Highly likely that will be due to DPF delete. I have a recent a thread on here due to failing an MOT.

My car had smoke as you describe and lots of it under full acceleration. I put a used DPF back in the car and passed fine.

But the only job of the DPF is remove physical soot i.e. the famous black "smoke" a diesel emits. My map is good and the black soot levels aren't that bad i.e. only at full throttle there is small amount.

It is the whiteish/blueish smoke that is bothering me and what is smelling. Even at idle it is emitting this type of smoke. The DPF will not block this. I thought it was the job of the cat? Or there is another issue.

Also, can someone explain the relationship to the intake manifold and how that can possibly have an affect? By the way, I have the EGR and the EGR cooler blanked off. That's not to say the intake manifold is in good condition - I have a plan to remove it and clean it out and refresh the gaskets. Could a dirty intake manifold relate to emitting white/blue smoke?

It is not the job of a Cat to remove smoke!

It is only meant to deal with CO, VOC's and NOx.

If you are emitting blue smoke it sounds like you are burning oil and possibly destroying your Cat in the process.

You need to identify why there is coloured smoke coming out of the exhaust.

What does it smell of? Oil? Anti-freeze?

White smoke is normally water so in combination with blue it sounds possible that you have water and oil getting into the cylinder(s).

If you have a friendly garage it may be worth asking for a compression test and an emissions test which might offer some clues.

Thank you. I understand different colours mean different liquids burning.
I do have a friendly garage and I will ask for a compression test/emissions test and take it from there.

I will be honest, I'm not quite sure what it smells of...just not pleasant. Possibly oil?? I don't know what burning antifreeze would smell of!

I undid the pipe going into where the EGR would be but is now just a plain pipe into the throttle body and there was some oil in there....

Noxious is probably the right word lol. I'm unsure if the cat is still there though..

A car with a DPF delete is not road legal & if your driving around with out one your car insurance is invalid.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...soeBF6QATN9SjE

Diesels are bad enough without irresponsible owners removing dpfs etc because they think it'll give them a few more bhp.
The effects of diesel particulates is well documented, it is a group 1 carcinogen.
Anyone driving with a dpf delete is frankly irresponsible & should have their cars taken off them & crushed whilst being made to watch

Only this morning I was following some clown in a e92 330d with it belching great plumes of noxious black smoke every time he floored it. Even with my vents closed & recirculation on I could still smell it & once we got to a stretch of road where I could overtake him he tried to get into a road race with me

these petrol owners always have an excuse!

to be honest though, DPF deleted cars do stink!

i don't feel the whole health thing is fair though when there is far greater polluters out there that get ignored, ships, trains and planes are horrendous!
the exhaust from ships actually erodes the insides of jet engines of the planes and helicopters they carry!!
honking

i'll be keeping my DPF for a long time, can produce shed loads of power with it on anyways, put these petrol folk to shame on the torque numbers

I don't know about insuring a car with the cats removed but that wasn't what I posted, I posted about DPF delete but I suspect the same rule applies to cat deletes.

Although it isn't illegal to remove a dpf, it is illegal to drive a car in the UK with a dpf removed.
So if your car isn't road legal it stands to reason that the insurance would be invalid. Hopefully you won't be involved in a serious accident & have to find out.

yeah pretty sure its the same as removing your cats, the insurance will cover theif ect but they would no doubt wriggle out of it.
although i doubt the insurer would know
