Plastidip questions

I wanted to plastidip my e93 335i.
I wasnt sure if i had to drop the top to do the back and the bottom part of the trim properly. Wasnt sure if i did it with the top on and later i dropped the too and there was some chrome showing. I was planning on doing the top part of the trim first then the bottom and back after the top dried and i took the roof off.
Wanted to save time and do it without removing the top.
Does Anyone know the answer to this?
Thank you!!

Don't dip it, it will look like crap. Dip has a terrible finish IMO. For the cost of dipping it, roughly $400 IIRC, you can wrap it for $200-$300 more yourself.

It will look like shit, peel off within a few months, and any self respecting BMW driver will laugh at you when he sees it. The words luxury car and plasti dip should never be used in the same sentence.

Money issues and you purchased a used 335???!!

Shit your money issues have not even begun yet. On top you got a vert, with a N54; bro you must be a gluten for pain.

Save your money man you will need it, believe me. And if you do go with any mods then do it right and don't half ass it.

And if you don't mind what is your mileage and what maintenance was already done to this car by either you or previous owners?

No, thank you for skipping on the plasti dip.

Also get the following done (around 65-70k)
change coolant
differential fluid
tranny fluid (pan and filter if auto tranny)
check around motor and oil filter housing for any oil leaks
check belt and pullies (they tend to go bad around 80k)
change power steering fluid
when changing the spark plugs you mind as well change the coils as well

I own an E93 as well. My advice, don't do shit to it and save the money you are going to spend on cosmetics because you are going to need it for maintenance. Once you have your finances in line, then work on cosmetics. A car isn't about looking nice, it's about transporting you where you need to go reliably. How shitty will it be to spend money on making it look nice and then not having money to repair it to actually serve it's purpose.

Side note on plastidip....you have a BMW, not a Honda. If plastidipping cars is your thing, sell the BMW and go buy a Honda.

People still plasti dip their cars? I thought that craze was over.

Out of curiosity what color is your car and what color do you want to wrap it in and why?

I personally have dipped my car already and I like it, it saved my paint from the assholes of nyc opening doors and scratching up my car. Also love the fact that I do t have to dry my car after a wash lol

As in window trim? Are you doing it yourself or having someone do it for you?

I did mine last year. If you are doing it yourself, let me know and I'll give you some pointers.

It isn't difficult, just time consuming until you get your rhythm down. Make sure you triple measure your length and width of the area you are covering an add an inch both ways before you cut your vinyl. Once the vinyl is cut lay it down and begin throwing heat on it whether it be a heat gun or a hair dryer. Then use the squeegee to press out any air bubbles. I used a scalpel to trim the edges but an x-acto knife or fine tip razor knife will work too. On an E93 it isn't that hard due to all the window trim pieces are relatively small for the exception of the piece on the trunk. To do that, you will need to raise the trunk in the opposite direction, like you are going to drop the top but once the trunk is is open stop. There are either 4 or six nuts on the bottom side you will need to locate and loosen for the plastic piece that lays over the chrome to be removed. Be mindful of the corner pieces that have the flaps.
Once the plastic is off, there will be plastic clips used to keep the chrome piece in place. Use needle nose pliers to depress the clips and remove the chrome trim piece. Make sure that you heat and stretch the vinyl around the edge/lip and use the squeegee to get in there good otherwise it will look like shit after. I had to do mine twice. Get back with me if you run into trouble.

Also if you would like pm me your email address and I will send you PDF's on care, maintenance, parts list and diagrams on your origami top. You do not want this thing failing on you. Not cheap to repair.

just do it, people act like a 335 is a expensive car. its not. prep and masking is key. use alot of coats. over time dip gets dirty and fades. last around a year looking decent. I hate when Bmw owners think its a Ferrari. get over your self. plastids your car, eBay that shit up...just do it with a little style. it can easily get riced out.

It has nothing to do with price, it has to do with plastidip looking like shit 100% of the time.

I plastidipped my car this past summer. I personally love it just because it means I don't have to worry about my paint any more. I "wash" it by spraying it down with spray-wax and wiping with a lint free towel.

My house is surrounded by trees and every fall season I'm left with a dent, you can see one in the first picture, and scratch from tree branches. Now the branches scratch just the dip. Even better is how I don't have to worry about parking next to people when I'm running late for class.

I don't expect the dip to last long, it has to come off before May for inspection, but for $400 I'm glad I tried it.

You're getting shitty advice by people who don't know shit...how ironic. PlastiDip can look great, plus there are several lines of quality within the dip product line, some that look just like modern paint/clear coat, yet are still peel-able. It's just like anything else, the quality of the product and the skill of the person applying it are what matters. It often looks bad because people don't take the time to prep and learn how to use it properly...just like paint...just like a wrap...BTW, if someone thinks a $400 dip job will look worse than a $6-700 wrap they're smoking the good stuff.

A word of advice, don't ask this kind of stuff on a forum full of high and mighty BMW owners who feel the need to look down on those who own Hondas. It's your car, your money, do as you wish. If you need advice on the product itself, seek sources that deal with the subject.

I don't think op was ever asking about dipping the entire car, it was just about chrome trim around the windows

Plasti Dip only looks half way in highly edited photos on the internet (that car above does not look good IMO but I hate flat black paint jobs too so). It always looks like shit in person, I have seen hundreds of dipped cars. And removing it is a horrendous job, just ask anyone who has actually removed it on any large scale. and the idea that it is better when it is applied professionally is bullshit.
