Try taking off the engine cover and see if that fixes it.

+1

This happened to me. Hopefully this is what's causing the rattle in your case, i.e the engine cover not being fixed on properly.

could be anything, worth checking.

I had a rattle on mine that I thought was the from the back seat/boot area, turned out to be the pillar where the seatbelt was.

just fixed a rattle on my mrs Clio, I thought it was coming from the passenger front wheel, but was actually a lose spare wheel! go figure!

If its a metallic rattle that could be under the bonnet, it could be the overrunning alternator pulley - it has a clutch in it that allows freewheeling in one direction to take up sudden changes in engine speed. When the clutch stops working, the changes in engine speed cause the belt to rattle the tensioner. Was doubtful when mine was diagnosed but a new one totally cured it. Most noticeable when pulling away and engine is cold.

It's a really common fault as the plastic clip fatigues, I swore to the tech the sound was coming from inside the cabin!

Mines only done about 50,000 miles but it needed a new one. Thought it was the exhaust at first but two independent people confirmed what it was. Having read up on them, they are a reasonably new thing on cars and I saw an article that said early ones can fail from 40k miles onwards but newer ones are much better. As you can imagine, if it is shot, the load from the engine speed changes could be going into other components potentially causing them to fail. A belt tensioner for example is more pricey than the pulley.
