Stock N54 + MHD Stage 1 Concerns

Hey guys,
Recently purchased a 2010 535i, car has 120k miles and have 10+ pages of maintenance records, this includes coils, plugs, waterpump, brakes, and load of other parts which love to fail. Today I flashed MHD Stage 1 91oct onto the car, went easy on the car for the first 15 minutes checking temps which were the same as stock, started doing a couple of pulls and engine temps went from around 103C --> 110C, granted it also was around 88F outside also. On my last pull the engine threw codes 2A87(VANOS Exhaust) and 3100(Boost Pressure). Got home and could tell the car was running hot, and reflashed the ECU to stock where only a HPFP code was throw driving slow, and hasn't returned since. I also have to mention, I was a complete idiot and forgot I had some 87OCT left over in the tank and was running 87 on a 91OCT tune. I plan on keeping the car for around a year, and was wondering if I should get the FWIC or just put the correct fuel in the car and try on a cooler day.

Definitely get the right octane in there and re-test. We should be also running 91 in our cars whether you’re stock or modified. Heck, when my car was stock I would add a few gallons of ethanol to raise the octane because our 91 octane is crap.

hello

if both vanos solenoids (intake and exhaust) has not been replaced for a while (check your history of maintenance) maybe you could replace them (or clean them), the 3100 code is the boost desactivation code that is paired with the 2A87, i got it a while ago, and replaced them

If you still keep getting 2a87 after getting new vanos solenoids, you got an expensive repair coming up (cam ledges).

Did you ever do any logs before you flashed the stage 1 tune to see what codes popped up? For certain....87 octane fuel is a "hell no" when it comes to these cars. 91 minimum is what you have to run.

Definitely thinking about reflashing the tune with correct gas and cooler weather outside

Need to check if the last owner did anything with the vanos solenoids, regardless I'm doing some frontend work to the car soon so I might tell my mechanic to take a peep

Haven't done any actual graph logging, going to look into it after today, really was just watching temps and put the correct gas in the car

Don't replace VANOS solenoids yet.

Firstly make sure you are using 40 weight oil. 5w-40, 10w-40 etc.

Before this, remove both solenoids and clean using carbi-cleaner. Pulse them during the cleaning process when soaked with the solvent. Be careful as sparks can ignite the carbi-cleaner solvent. Make sure O ring is installed right upon reinstall.

Check you fitted the small O ring in the oil filter cap correctly.

Make sure you bled the cooling system enough as well.

Next reflash MHD and set coolant to run in sports mode. This will set system to target coolant temp to 95C

I would also reset engine adaptation.

There is also the VANOS check valves that have filters on them. I would clean these as well but a bit more difficult to get to.

Hey just wanted to follow up if anyone really cares lol.
I put in 93octane and reflashed the Stage 1 map with also changing my coolant target to sport. The car ran perfect and my oil temps are between 225 - 250F with the most I've ever seen it at was 255F after some pulls. My IAT also never goes above 105F. Car feels like it should, and after going Stage 1 I fear I might never like the stock power of the car again, you really feel the boost at around 3 - 4k. The car loves to spin the tires with the new power and after I do some launches you can 100% smell burning rubber, stay safe!

Glad you didn’t throw any money on parts before getting the right octane in there and re-testing. Enjoy the extra power!

Good man, you'll probably want more power soon lol. How's your fuel consumption with sport cooling activated, i heard varying reports of some claiming it absolutely tanks fuel economy?
