Valve Covers

I have an 07 335i with about 130K miles on it and I am getting ready to do an overhaul on it. I have been around N54 tuning scene for a long time but stopped following it closely a few years ago so there is a lot I am trying to get caught up on.

Currently on the car is Stett CAI, Forge DVs, Forge intercooler, JB4, Magnaflow Catback, and Wavetrac LSD.

Waiting to go on the car is Pure600s, VSRF Cat-less Downpipes, VSRF 2" inlets, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, oil filter housing gasket, coils, spark plugs, walbro 450, MHD and M3 control arms front and rear.

I want to make decent power with the 600s but don't plan to push them to the limit. What I am trying to understand is if it would be smart to go ahead and replace the valve cover with one of the aluminum options available. Is it really needed at the power levels you can push the 600s too or is it just nice to have. Are they ever really needed? I just want to make sure I have all the parts I need before I open it up so I am not waiting on parts.

If the current one isn't leaking I wouldn't replace it. If you really want peace of mind, install an RB external PCV kit, plugging the head ports, at the same time you replace the valve cover gasket. I personally don't think it's worth it to pay for the aluminum valve cover. Use that money for custom tuning instead.

You absolutely do not need an aluminum valve cover at any power the pure 600's will make. You'll even see most big single guys rocking the stock one.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking as well. I plant to check mine over real well to make sure it is not cracked before it goes back on.

I was looking at the RB external PCV yesterday. The only part I am a little lost on is the oil catch can. I already have a BMS catch can installed on the car. Would I need to install a second one with the RB kit?

That's really smart. Make sure to clean the metal surface (on the engine) so it's perfectly smooth before installing the new gasket. I don't see a need for two oil catch cans. Seems like over kill.

I see inlets on your list; what are you doing for outlets?

I had not planned on changing the outlets at this time.
