Is there a 335xi oil pan gasket DIY?

I've done my searching and just can't find a DIY for the 335xi. It looks like the front differential is bolted on the bottom of the oil pan or something. It just looks all sorts of confusing and I already have the parts and the sub-frame dropped for the new catalytic converters I'm installing.

I twisted a bolt off one of the exhaust clamp bands so if anyone has one in the DFW area, please let me know and I'll come by tomorrow to get it.

I want to do this install, but I'm about to take it to an indy shop to do this. I'd hate to do this, but I'm a little overwhelmed by the exhaust install as it is. They REALLY don't give you any room to work in there!

Doubt it. Wish there was more DIY stuff for our cars. I watched the Clutch video from Bavauto and HPF when I had to do my clutch, then when I got underneath I was like..... WTF ????

I'd like to see a clutch DIY (which I should have done), a waterpump DIY and an Oil pan DIY. These are the items people seem to be having issue with, mainly the water pump though.

If you decide to do it you should snap some pics.

Garage List
Oil pan on xi would be a huge pita. Outside of dropping the subframe (which you have already done) you would have to disconnect the front drive shaft and pull both front axles. The passenger side diff output runs thru the oil pan and the diff is bolted to the side of the oil pan.. Not sure if you can drop the pan with the front diff and passenger side axle carrier attached or not.

Well, damn. I don't know if I'm up to doing all that! I've turned lots of wrenches in my younger days, but I've never had a car that's this difficult...and I owned a Ford Powerstroke!

OK. I think I'm going to do it! I'll take pictures and post a DIY when finished. I have to pick up an engine cradle first. As long as I got everything apart already...

I chickened out. I put the exhaust back together and called it a night. Not sure I'm knowledgeable enough to keep myself out of trouble if I tore into that.

I brought home a 2010 535i today. That other one was killing me with repairs. This one fits my family better and has the M Sport package. I like it!

How bad was it, I ordered a new gasket and new bolts, do I need anything else? Why didn't you do a "how to" lol I gotta do mine soon, what are the main steps and any big pains in the assets to look out for?

It wasn't awful. Once you pull the subframe, then the axles, it's just a matter of removing the power steering pump, the front diff (4 bolts), then the oil pan. I didn't do a DIY because I was just trying to hammer it out as quickly as possible. It's common sense once you get it all off.

Silly question but did you have to drain the diff? I'm just trying to get everything I need before I take this on.. I've done multiple clutches in evo's so I'm sure I can knock this out fairly easy lol.

Aside from the oil pan gasket and bolt set for the pan. Do I need anything else?

For removing the axles, did you need to remove any of the suspension components? The axle nut on the hub? Thanks!

Did this awhile ago, can't remember exactly. I know you'll need an engine support that holds the engine from the top while you drop the subframe. Other than that I don't think so. I did use gasket maker on both sides of the gasket just to be use there would be no leaks. Was it necessary? No but I didn't want to do it again.

Did this awhile ago but not positive but I'm pretty sure we left to drivers side axle in the hub and just pulled it out of the front diff, you'll need to unbolt the tie rods and ball joints (I think). The passenger side axle will need to be removed from the hub because it's really long and goes through the oil pan.

If I remember correctly some of the fluid leaks out when you pull the axles. If you didn't want to just change the fluid (which I'd recommend) then i suppose you could just top it up.
